| As a name card of the world outside China,Confucius Institutes shoulder the heavy responsibility of teaching Chinese language and spreading Chinese culture.Since the first Confucius Institute was established in Seoul,South Korea in 2004,it has mushroomed and quickly taken root in every corner of the world,conveying the voice of China.While the rapid development of Confucius Institutes has made many brilliant achievements,it has also attracted the attention of the international public opinion.The evaluation of Confucius Institutes by the international mainstream media is mixed with praise and criticism.The international public opinion environment plays a very important role in the image building of Confucius Institutes.South Korea has the largest number of Confucius Institutes in Asia.Due to historical and geographical reasons,China and South Korea have maintained good communication since the establishment of diplomatic ties,but it is known to all that South Korea is inclined to the United States in politics and diplomacy,and the United States’ international discourse power and media discourse construction ability have great guiding power in the international community.Therefore,in order to realize the long-term and sustainable development of the cause of Confucius Institutes in South Korea,it is very necessary to study the news reports of Confucius Institutes by mainstream media in South Korea,to explore the tendency of the news reports of Confucius Institutes and the ideology behind the reports,as well as the impact on the Korean people.In order to provide a certain reference for the overseas brand building and public opinion response of Confucius Institutes.Central daily in South Korea mainstream media and the news about the Confucius institute of chosun ilbo newspaper reported as the research object,time is defined as June31,2004 and 2022,the mainstream media in South Korea "central daily" and the official website of chosun ilbo newspaper,to "(?)" as keywords,a total of 503 samples,after two rounds of selection,After removing the samples unrelated to the subject of Confucius Institute reports,63 valid samples were obtained,including 27 from Joongang Ilbo and 36 from Chosun Ilbo.The research framework of this paper adopts Faircllow’s three-dimensional discourse analysis method(text--discourse practice--social practice)to make a quantitative comparative analysis of the content of news reports on Confucius Institutes in Joongang Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo from various angles.Then,the retrieval function of the corpus search software Antcinc(3.4.3)is applied.A linguistic description of the corpus.Based on the analysis results,this paper discusses the influencing factors of the news reports on Confucius Institutes in mainstream media in South Korea and puts forward corresponding suggestions.This paper consists of five parts.The introduction part expounds the research background,research significance,research ideas and methods of this paper,reviews the research literature on Confucius Institutes at home and abroad,and focuses on the theoretical basis of this paper and the definition of the relevant concepts of critical discourse analysis.The first chapter makes a quantitative and comparative analysis of the sample content of the news reports on Confucius Institutes in Joongang Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo,and makes a horizontal and vertical comparison of the news title,news theme and news length.Longitudinal comparison of the number of reports,the report topic,the length of the report changes year by year.From the perspective of critical discourse analysis,the second chapter makes a critical analysis from four aspects: high-frequency word analysis,thematic word analysis,metaphor analysis and intertextuality analysis.The third chapter explains the influencing factors of news reports on Confucius Institutes by Joongang Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo from the perspectives of national interests,international relations and individual habits of journalists,and puts forward corresponding suggestions on the international public opinion environment of Confucius Institutes according to the analysis results above.The conclusion part expounds the research conclusions,innovations,deficiencies and prospects of this paper.The research results show that on the one hand,Joongang Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo affirmed the role of Confucius Institutes in language and culture transmission and promoting friendly exchanges between the two countries,and established a positive image of Confucius Institutes as messengers of Chinese language transmission,Windows to understand China and Bridges of cultural exchanges between China and South Korea.On the other hand,by means of metaphor,intertext and other means,a large number of negative reports from Western countries,especially the United States,that raised doubts about Confucius Institutes are quoted and reported,so as to construct negative images of Confucius Institutes as a tool of promoting China’s overseas influence,affecting academic freedom,attempting to collect national social information in the target country in an improper way,and being the spearhead of China’s public diplomacy.Putting a political spin on the Confucius Institute’s image.To effectively respond to international public opinion and achieve the sustainable development of Confucius Institutes,this paper proposes five suggestions: leveraging non-Western media and local media,utilizing social media,deepening the integration of Confucius Institutes with the local community,establishing a dedicated platform for public opinion responses,and fully utilizing the role of Confucius Institute teachers. |
