Translation is a process of cross-language and cross-culture social dialogue.The Secret History of the Mongols,written in 774,is the first large-scale written work after the birth of Mongolian characters,which has rich cultural connotation and permanent literary value,and is known as the "genesis" type of cultural classics of the Mongolian ethnic group.Ethnic classics play an important role in inheriting and spreading Chinese civilization.As a rare book,The Secret History of the Mongols has long attracted the attention of academic circles at home and abroad.Since its introduction to foreign countries in the 1960 s,The Secret History of the Mongols has been translated into Russia,Germany,Japan,France,Turkey,Persia,Italy,Spain and other languages,throughout a number of languages.Compared with other translations,although the English version started late,but the number of significant.This paper takes the English version of the Secret History of the Mongols by Cleaves,De Rachewitlz Igor and Urgunge Onon as the research object,conducts a comparative study on the translation of culture-specific words and idioms in the three English versions,summarizes the characteristics of different versions,and explores the reasons for the formation of translation characteristics.The thesis consists of introduction,text,conclusion,appendix.The introduction part explains the reasons for the topic selection,the research overview of the English translation of the Secret History of the Mongols,the purpose and significance of the research and the research methods.The first part mainly introduces the translator and English version.Firstly,the life and educational background of the translators are explained,which is very important for understanding the characteristics of the translation.Secondly,it introduces the translation process,structure and other basic information of the English version,which is helpful to understand the characteristics of a translation.The second part mainly makes a comparative study on the translation of culture-specific words and idioms in the English version of the Secret History of the Mongols by Cleaves,De Rachewitlz Igor,Urgunge Onon.On the basis of a comparative study of the translation of culture-specific words and idioms,this paper tries to reveal the differences in the translation strategies and language styles of the three translators.The third part mainly summarizes the characteristics of the three English versions of the Secret History of the Mongols by Cleaves,De Rachewitlz Igor and Urgunge Onon,on the basis of the comparison of the translation of stylistic,culture-specific words and idioms,and explores the causes of the characteristics.
