Abstract/Summary:
Virginia Woolf was an outstanding representative of British stream-of-consciousness novelists in the 20 th century. She used the stream-of-consciousness technique in many of her works, and Mrs.Dalloway is one of the most representative works. This novel is also one of the masterpieces of British modernist fiction. As an advocate of stream-of-consciousness fiction,Woolf emphasized that the purpose of a stream-of-consciousness novel is to express the changing, indefinable inner spirit in life.In recent years, many domestic scholars have made studies of Mrs.Dalloway, mainly for the artistic appreciation of the novel and less for the systematic study of it based on stylistic theory.Meanwhile, the foregrounding theory in this field has also received great attention from domestic scholars, and its application has been extended to the fields of advertising, translation, and foreign language teaching. This thesis attempts to analyze and interpret this novel,Mrs.Dalloway, with foregrounding theory as theoretical support, based on the characteristics of the text, analyzing the foregrounded linguistic phenomena at six levels: graphological, phonological, semantic, grammatical, syntactic, and pragmatic level by description, example analysis, and summary.By describing, interpreting, and evaluating these foregrounded components, this thesis tries to interpret the effects of these features, aiming to reveal their stylistic effects in specific contexts and provide a relatively objective basis for a thorough understanding of the thematic significance of Mrs.Dalloway and an appreciation of the aesthetic value of Woolf’s stream-of-consciousness novels,in the hope that they will also be helpful for the study of Woolf’s other works.Through the analysis, this study finds that:(1)At the different linguistic levels,Woolf repeatedly uses foregrounded language, such as grammatical deviation, free indirect discourse, and recurring symbolic images, which complement each other, meticulously portraying the psychological state of the characters, showing the complex changes, better highlighting the theme, and revealing the themes of life, death, war and feminism to the fullest.(2)Using foregrounding theory to analyze literary works helps to deepen the understanding of the theme of the work, appreciate the beauty of its language, and advance the continuous development of literature.(3)The analysis of Mrs.Dalloway is not only an attempt to analyze the genre of stream-of-consciousness novels but also proves the feasibility of the genre analysis model for appreciating stream-of-consciousness novels.
