A Report On The E-C Translation Of Amongst The Shans (Chapter 13-14)

The Shans is one of the most populous ethnic groups in Southeast Asia,and they share the same roots with the Dai people of China.Shan culture is an important part of the culture of ASEAN countries.Knowing more about the Shan people helps to strengthen the cultural ties between China and ASEAN countries,enhance China’s understanding of the ethnic cultures of ASEAN countries,and is of great significance in promoting China’s studies of Southeast Asian ethnic cultures,maintaining regional stability,and building a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future.The translation report is a summary of the English-Chinese translation of Amongst the Shans(chapters 13 and 14).The book,written by the famous British explorer Archibald Ross Colquhoun,is a travelogue,showing readers the natural scenery and humanities the Shan people.The language of this book is vivid and concise,with objective descriptions of customs of the Shans.It includes many names of people and places,as well as some proper nouns and terms.The translation report selects chapters13 and 14 of Amongst the Shans for translation,taking the theory of functional equivalence as the theoretical guide,comparing and analyzing the differences between English and Chinese languages at the lexical level and syntactic level,and using translation methods such as rearrangement to make the translation faithful to the source text.The translation report is divided into five chapters.The first chapter briefly introduces the translation project and explains the purpose and significance of selecting chapters 13 and 14 of Amongst the Shans as the target text.The second chapter is a description of the translation process,including pre-translation preparation,translation process,and post-translation.The third chapter introduces the theory of functional equivalence,and describes the feasibility of the theory in guiding the practice of translating travelogue.The fourth chapter is a case study,which details how the translator analyzes the characteristics of the source text from two aspects,namely lexical features and syntactic features,and adopts appropriate translation methods to solve the translation problems in the English-Chinese translation practice under the guidance of functional equivalence.The fifth chapter is a summary of translation practice,which outlines the problems difficult to solve in translation practice,the gains made in revising the translation,and the inspiration and prospect for future study work.This report finds an effective translation approach under the guidance of functional equivalence theory and proposes more practical translation techniques for solving the difficulties of travelogue texts,which is hoped to be of reference significance for future translation research and practice.
