| Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs),the 11 th is “Sustainable Cities and Communities”,aiming to promote inclusive, safe and sustainable human settlements.Leisure plays an integral part in urban sustainability. In academia, the contributions of leisure and the news discourse of leisure remain underexplored.Based on Fairclough’s Three-dimensional Model and Systemic Functional Linguistics, this research conducts quantitative and qualitative analysis on 318 news reports from China Daily and CNN.In this study, there are three research questions:(1)What are the shared patterns and different focuses of leisure in news reports from China Daily and CNN respectively? What are the implications of the similarities and differences?(2)Who are the key participants or speakers in constructing the discourse of leisure in the related news reports of China Daily and CNN?(3)What are the potential factors from the larger contexts affecting the process of news production in China Daily and CNN?The findings reveal that China Daily tends to be nationalistic-centric with affirmative representation, while CNN is multiculturalism-oriented with diversified viewpoints. The specific results are:(1)Tourism and sports are focused by both sides, with CNN on the phenomenon of overtourism and China Daily on the sustainable development of villages and suburban areas.(2)The government, experts, entrepreneurs, and ordinary people are the main four participants in the construction of leisure discourse in news reports. The largest group is government for CD and entrepreneurs for CNN,respectively.(3)News production from both sides is influenced by political, institutional, and cultural factors. This study proposes a model of sustainable leisure cities and communities, enriching the solution to the SDG from the perspective of leisure. Moreover,it provides practical implications on how to present compelling China stories from the perspective of leisure and shape China’s image. |
