Abstract/Summary:
Beginning in 1880,the United States received millions of Jewish immigrants in the next half-century.Until the introduction of the "Immigration Act" in 1924,the annual number of immigrants was completely restricted. As an eastern port city established during the colonial period,Philadelphia developed into an important political, economic, and transportation hub in the United States after the Industrial Revolution, attracting a large number of Jewish immigrants. The Jewish population in Philadelphia has surged from 15,000 to 240,00.The influx of Jewish immigrants during this period changed the city’s demographics and laid the foundations for the modern American Jewish way of life.Based on the perspective of global history and immigration history, this paper uses literature, archives, and oral historical materials to investigate the Jewish immigrants in Philadelphia from 1880 to 1924,explore their economic, and cultural life and participation in political life after they took root in Philadelphia, and investigate The difficulties they encountered in the process of adapting to American life are clarified, and their contributions to the social development of Philadelphia are clarified,to see how Jewish immigrants as a minority group make a balance between cultural integration and the dilemma of maintaining national identity.Based on the above considerations, this paper has the following arrangements in terms of chapters:The introduction part aims to clarify the research background of this paper and sort out the current research status of American Jews and Jewish immigrants in Philadelphia at home and abroad, and finally summarize the research significance of this paper. The first chapter conducts a preliminary investigation on the settlement of Jews in Philadelphia from 1880 to 1924 by using demographic statistics and summarizing immigrant files. There are three entry points for the research: firstly,it discusses the background of immigration, which includes both the massacre of Jews in the place of origin and the attraction of Jews to the New World in Philadelphia,USA.The push and pull of the two caused a large number of Jews to leave Eastern Europe for the United States during this period. The second is an overview of the distribution of communities where immigrants came to Philadelphia. Most of them concentrated in South Philadelphia,Society Hill, and Port Richmond, forming a dense Jewish ghetto.Later, with the development of urban transportation and changes in work and occupation,Immigrants begin a movement away from the old neighborhood;finally, the interaction between old and new Jewish immigrants is explored.Old-fashioned German Jews are worried about the intensification of social anti-Semitism due to the cultural and educational level of the new immigrants and a large number of immigrants. The attitude towards Eastern European Jewish refugees has changed from rejection to acceptance, helping them start a new life in Philadelphia. The arrival of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe also laid the foundation for the continued preservation and inheritance of Jewish culture in the United States. The second chapter discusses the social living conditions of Jews in Philadelphia by using archival materials and oral historical materials and discusses them from four aspects: First,in terms of economic life,Jews are mainly engaged in factory work and commodity sales, and the working environment is relatively harsh Moreover, wages are generally low,and upward mobility began after World War I.Second,in terms of political life,in addition to participating in traditional politics,Jews organized many labor movements and paid close attention to the Zionist movement. It was different before and after World War I;thirdly,in terms of religious culture, the Jewish sect in Philadelphia became more complex with the arrival of Jewish immigrants. The reforms in the city and the Yiddish language that came with immigrants enriched the spiritual and cultural life of the Jews. The leisure and entertainment activities not only reflected the living conditions in Philadelphia at that time but were also an important manifestation of the integration of Jews into the United States.Fourth,in social activities,Jews formed numerous associations and developed charitable undertakings to promote their development. At the same time,Jewish women and young people gradually stepped onto the stage to play a unique role during this period. The third chapter discusses the obstacles encountered by Jewish immigrants in Philadelphia in the process of integrating into mainstream society and their contributions to society. The Jewish immigrants in Philadelphia are rejected by mainstream society mainly because of the explosive immigrant population, large differences in national culture, and the gradual rise of extreme nationalism in society. The mainstream society’s rejection of Jewish immigrants is mainly reflected in restricting them.Aspects such as enrolling in school, joining a company, and participating in trips to public places.Faced with the difficulty of integration,Jewish immigrants took the initiative to adjust their religious culture and lifestyle, and activities adapted to the life of mainstream society. At the same time, they retained and innovated their own excellent national culture, and retained their national characteristics while integrating into society. After being gradually accepted by mainstream society,Jewish immigrants participated in all aspects of social life and made important contributions to the development of Philadelphia and even the United States. The overall investigation of the Jewish immigrants in Philadelphia from 1880 to1924 shows that Philadelphia Jewish immigrants have both the common characteristics of Jews in other parts of the United States and their own particularities influenced by the city’s characteristics. As immigrants,Jews must strive to maintain their unique identity and cultural identity while integrating into the United States.During the process of actively integrating into mainstream society,Philadelphia Jews were gradually accepted, showing the courage to pursue a new life in the new world, while maintaining Their own cultural traditions and community relations,to find a balance between Americanization and national identity. This process is not only of great significance to the Jewish immigrants themselves but also provides an important perspective for an in-depth discussion of the American immigration process and multiculturalism.
