| This report is based on the translation practice of The Diplomatic Relations of Great Britain and the United States(chapters24-26)written by Robert Balman Mowett,a famous British scholar of diplomatic history.The book talks about the diplomatic development between the Great Britain and United States from the late 18 th century to the early 20 th century.The source text is objective in language expression and rigorous in writing,which has high translation value.According to Newmark’s text typology theory,the book belongs to informative text and mainly narrates the historical facts of the diplomacy between these two countries.It has the characteristics of informative text because of its professional vocabulary and logical language.The author mainly pays attention to the transmission of objective facts.And the book is impersonal and the author uses a plain language style to demonstrate the historical facts.Based on the feature of the source text the translator applied the theory of functional equivalence to guide the translation practice as well as the translation cases analysis.The translator believes that one of the important criteria to evaluate the quality of translation is whether the target text can effectively transmit the information of the source text.The purpose of this practice is to convey diplomatic information,so the translator takes domestication as the main translation strategy and uses foreignization translation according to the actual situation.In the translation process,the translator uses literal translation,free translation,amplification and other translation methods and skills to ensure the integrity and accuracy of the translation,thus to accurately transmit the semantic meaning of the source text.To sum up,this translation practice strives to meet the information needs of scholars and even those who are interested in diplomatic studies both in China and abroad.It aims to provide relevant experts and scholars with reference to historical facts. |
