Mind wandering is a common psychological process in healthy groups, which will have an important impact on individual work, study and life.It is generally found in the research on the brain mechanism of mind wandering that mind wandering is related to the functional activities of multiple brain regions. However, previous resting-state f MRI studies on individual mind wandering mostly investigated the static characteristics of mind wandering brain activity, and there was little research on the dynamic characteristics of brain activity.Current research showed that the dynamic functional connection of brain activity in resting state is related to the frequency of mind wandering, which is reflected in the instability of network activity in the default mode.In addition, there is a strong consistency between the whole brain functional connectivity features and local connectivity features of brain activity,so we believe that individual mind wandering state may also be related to the dynamic nature of local features of brain activity. In addition, previous studies on the brain structure of mind wandering mostly focused on patients with brain injury and neurodegenerative diseases, and they found a significant correlation between the damaged or changed brain regions of individuals and the frequency of mind wandering. This indicates that changes in brain structure may affect the generation of mind wandering. Therefore,we infer that in healthy groups, brain structures may differ among individuals with different degrees of mind wandering.Based on multimodal functional magnetic resonance imaging(resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and structural magnetic resonance imaging),this study examined the dynamic differences of multiple local indicators between high-and low-mind wandering groups,as well as the differences between the gray matter volumes of the brain of the high-and low-mind wandering groups. The research includes two studies. In Study 1,30 healthy adults(18–45 years old)were divided into high mental wandering group and low mental wandering group according to the degree of mental wandering.A combination of continuous attention response task index and multiple measurement indexes of f MRI images were used for statistical analysis.Statistics that on the dynamics of local indexes of cerebral kinetic energy, the dynamics of local indexes of high and low mind wandering groups presented as the difference between the right superior occipital gyrus and the right dorsal lateral frontal gyrus on the local consistency index(Re Ho).On the index of degree centrality(DC),it shows the difference between the peripheral cortex of left parietal fissure and right inferior frontal gyrus of orbit. The low-frequency amplitude index(ALFF)shows the differences among the left superior temporal gyrus, the left inferior temporal gyrus, and the gyrus of the left anterior cingulate and accessory cingulate. The results of regression analysis further verified the correlation between these brain regions and mind wandering.Study 2 adopted the same research object as study 1,combined with sustained attention response task index and structural magnetic resonance image index for statistical analysis. The results of Study 2 showed that,in terms of grey matter volume differences in brain structure, the brain structure of the high and low mind wandering groups was characterized by the difference in grey matter volume of the left dorsal lateral frontal gyrus. The results of regression analysis further verified the significant negative correlation between this part of the brain region and mind wandering. The results of these studies indicate that there are differences in the dynamics of spontaneous brain activities among individuals with high and low mind wandering, and they have certain brain structural basis. This study examined the correlation between the degree of mind wandering of individuals and dynamic local indicators of brain function, and also explored the correlation between the degree of mind wandering of healthy groups and brain structure. The conclusions support the previous studies and indicate that the dynamics of ALFF,Re Ho and DC are the most sensitive to the brain activity which measures mind wandering, which provides a theoretical basis for the study of brain mechanism of mind wandering. In addition,it is found in this study that different degrees of mind wandering have certain brain structure basis in healthy groups, which provides a certain clinical basis for the diagnosis and intervention of mental disorders related to mind wandering(such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
