A Practice Report On The Translation Of The Scandal Of Susan Sontag From The Perspective Of Intertextuality Theory

Susan Sontag is a noted American writer and critic.The Scandal of Susan Sontag presents a complex portrait of Sontag and provides different perspectives to examine Sontag and her works.This thesis analyzes the translative practice of The Scandal of Susan Sontag from the theory of intertextuality and the principles of intertextual translation.There are many intertextual references in the Chapter One,Chapter Seven and Chapter Twelve of The Scandal of Susan Sontag,which are taken as translation materials of this practice.On the one hand,many intertextual references between essays and Sontag’s works can be found.On the other hand,there are various intertextual references between Sontag’s works and western philosophy,history,and art.This practice report focuses on how to fully identify the intertextual marks and express the intertextuality in the translation.On the basis of the principles of intertextual translation,including relevance principle,economic principle,neutralization principle proposed by Luo Xuanmin,this translative practice employs translation methods of adding annotations,quotation,literal translation and omission.Based on the above principles and methods,this thesis finds that when the original text has a unique cultural background,annotations can be added,according to the relevance principle,to express the intertextual references.Chinese contextual expressions can be used if they match the meaning of the original text,so as to restore intertextual references.Literal translation can be used to make the translation concise when the intertextual information is clear.Omission can be used to delete interfering information to meet the economic principle.In short,translation should convey intertextual references and the translator should adopt translation methods flexibly according to the text and the principles of intertextual translation.
