The Kite Runner is the first novel written by Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini. It is also the first novel written in English by a writer with Afghan background. The book is translated by Li Jihong, who has expressed the emotion of The Kite Runner in beautiful and touching language.Li Jihong’s translation of this book has sold more than 7 million copies and it has been printed more than 100 times since its publication, which shows its popularity among readers in China. This thesis adopts the method of textual analysis, which is based on the perspective of Homi Bhabha’s theory of hybridity, and it studies the hybrid components in this book.Li Jihong adopts the strategy of hybridity which allows two cultures to communicate and merge in the Third Space, making the translation easy to be accepted by the target readers and reflecting a certain "heterogeneity".Meanwhile, this thesis discusses the hybrid components by Li Jihong in the translation of The Kite Runner, and analyzes the manifestation of hybridity on three aspects: language, culture, and literature. In terms of language, hybridity is manifested in the translation of proper nouns, such as the transliteration of the names of people and places as well as the literal translation of italic words. In terms of culture,he adopts a combination of preservation and uses counterparts in the target culture for religion and customs. In terms of literature,he adopts a combination of adaptation and preservation for style and narrative techniques.Hybrid translated texts can introduce the culture of the source text, enrich the target text and improve cultural communication.By analyzing the inevitability of hybridity and the unbalanced relationship of studies in this field, the author believes that it is also very necessary to further strengthen the study of hybridity in translation. |
