Catless Kingdom of Sun Yuxiu is the masterpiece of the “Children’s Literature”series and the earliest single-volume fairy tale in China. Most current research has focused on Sun Yuxiu’s personal translation achievements, but less on the factors that contributed to the success of Catless Kingdom and the historical causes of Sun Yuxiu’s adoptions of translation strategies. In his translation works,Sun Yuxiu paid more attention to a group that was easily neglected at that time—children, embodying his “child-centered” thinking. This idea contributed to the emergence of“child-oriented” thinking in the May Fourth period. However, due to Sun Yuxiu’s field and personal habitus, his works are not completely free from the inherent local characteristics of children’s literature in the late Qing and early Republican period. Therefore, his works are not only filled with innovation, but also imply the educational thought of children. This thesis adopts descriptive and literature combing methods, and takes Sun Yuxiu’s translation of Catless Kingdom as the research object.Based on the perspective of field and habitus theory,it explores the strategy of Sun Yuxiu’s adaption of this work, and then analyzes the reasons for the success of the translation and the influence of his works on the development of children’s literature translation in the future. This study finds that Sun Yuxiu’s translation takes a child’s perspective and adopts translation strategies such as reorganization, naturalization to make appropriate adaptations to the original text so that children can fully understand and accept fairy tales that come entirely from a foreign country.Sun Yuxiu’s translation has the phenomenon of “creative treason” and allows children of that time to read fairy tales that were truly written for children. On the whole,Sun Yuxiu also added the idea of adult education of children to his translation. This study can provide new directions for the subsequent development of domestic children’s literature translation, and expand the study of the influence and acception of Western Children’s literature in translation.
