Listening and speaking class is an important part of English teaching in senior high school.The English Curriculum Standards for Ordinary Senior High School(revised in 2017 and 2020)clearly points out that students should have a certain understanding of English after receiving English education in senior high school.Specifically,students are required to integrate their existing language knowledge in common specific contexts and effectively use spoken language for interpersonal communication.However,under the pressure of examination-oriented education,most high school English teachers in China prioritize students’ accuracy in answering questions.Students’ listening and speaking has not been given enough attention,which makes it difficult for students’ listening and speaking skills to meet the requirements of the curriculum standards.Therefore,how to improve the effectiveness of English listening and speaking classes in senior high schools and enhance students’ pragmatic competence is a hot topic of great concern to educators.Production-oriented Approach(POA)is a foreign language teaching theory constructed to overcome the “separation of learning and use” problem in English teaching.And the Debate Teaching advocates the student-centered concept.It emphasizes students’ participation and interaction in classes,which fully embodies the new curriculum concept.Therefore,based on Production-oriented Approach,Constructive Theory and Humanistic Learning Theory,this paper mainly discusses the application of Debate Teaching guided by POA in English listening and speaking classes in senior high school through the methods of experiment,questionnaire,classroom observation and interview.The main purpose is to answer the following three questions:1.What is the attitude of senior high school students towards Debate Teaching under the guidance of POA?2.What is the role of Debate Teaching under the guidance of POA in promoting senior high school students’ learning of English listening and speaking?3.What is the impact of Debate Teaching under the guidance of POA on senior high school students’ critical thinking?To explore the above issues,the author conducted a three-month teaching experiment on52 first-year high school students in Yi Chang City,and conducted questionnaire surveys and interviews before and after the experiment.Based on classroom observations,the author find that: 1.Students who participate in the experiment generally recognize this teaching method.2.This method arouses students’ interest in listening and speaking,strengthens students’ confidence in improving their listening and speaking level and improves students’ enthusiasm in oral expression.What’s more,it enriches students’ learning strategies,improves students’ listening and speaking ability and learning competence,speeds up students’ learning efficiency in listening and speaking classes.3.This method promotes students’ critical thinking,makes students more dialectical,stronger in systematic ability,more confident in themselves,and more motivated in learning.The purpose of this study is to provide suggested teaching methods for senior high school English listening and speaking teaching based on Debate Teaching practice.Therefore,after the experiment,the author summarized the teaching experience of this experiment and provided some teaching suggestions,such as improving the organizational form of debate activities,strengthening assistance and guidance during the debate process and so on,hoping to provide a feasible approach for the further promotion of this method.
