Since Confucius established humanism,thinking about moral personality has always been an important topic for later Confucianism.In Confucius’ view,"gentleman" is endowed with more moral significance and becomes an ideal personality form between scholars and sages.The self-cultivation of a gentleman marks the establishment of moral personality.Mencius completely inherited Confucius’ moral connotation of a gentleman,and creatively expounded the ideal personality concept of "gentleman",forming a relatively rich and systematic "gentleman view".Under this background,the paper fully combines the existing research results in academic circles and launches a new text investigation on Mencius’ view of gentleman.This paper mainly takes Mencius as the research text,focusing on the gentleman thought contained in the book as the research object,taking the gentleman as the unified theme concept,and comprehending and grasping it by returning to the context of the classic text of Mencius,focusing on the interpretation and elucidation of the core essence of Mencius’ view of gentleman faithful to the text’s own ideological system,in order to more systematically excavate and present its ideological connotation.The full text is mainly divided into four parts: the first part,the introduction part,combs around the introduction of the problem,the summary of relevant literature,the research ideas and innovations,etc.This part is the preparatory stage for the study of Mencius’ view of gentlemen.The second part,the theoretical source and formation background of Mencius’ view of gentleman.By discussing the origin and evolution of the concept of "gentleman",this paper analyzes the relationship between gentleman and human nature from the level of human nature theory,and clarifies the logical starting point of gentleman as a gentleman.The third part,the main content of Mencius’ view of gentleman.Including three aspects: first,the metaphysical basis of a gentleman.By expounding the relationship between heaven and man,this paper analyzes the gentleman’s understanding and practice of the life of heaven,and explores the moral basis for a gentleman to be a gentleman.Second,the gentleman’s personality cultivation.By discussing the relationship between body and mind,this paper analyzes the personality cultivation of a gentleman from the aspects of "generality" and "corpuscle","perseverance" and "nourishing qi","intention" and "self-cultivation".Third,the moral responsibility of a gentleman.By discussing the relationship between self and others and groups,this paper expounds the moral responsibility of a gentleman,and then expounds the ideal personality and spiritual realm of a gentleman who pursues the sage atmosphere.The fourth part,the conclusion part,the influence and contemporary value of Mencius’ gentleman view on later Confucianism.Explain from the following aspects: the continuation of Confucian spiritual lifeline,the establishment of citizen’s subject personality,the foundation of social moral civilization and spiritual belief.Through discussion,it can be concluded that Mencius’ view of a gentleman is an observation and exploration of the dimension of the relationship between man and nature,between body and mind,and the group of oneself.It takes human nature as the logical starting point of a gentleman and the relationship between man and nature as the metaphysical basis of a gentleman.In the relationship between body and mind,it shows the self-cultivation of inner virtue and the improvement of personality realm,and in the relationship between group and oneself,it shows the universal responsibility of a gentleman as a moral subject to society.Mencius did not define the concept of "gentleman",but expounded the ideological connotation of gentleman from the aspects of mind,destiny,cultivation and benevolent government.Mencius’ explanation of "gentleman" comes from and returns to his whole ideological system,and it can be said that Mencius’ view of gentleman is an important link throughout his whole ideological system.
