Analysis Of The Use Of "cloud" And "water" Painting Techniques In Gao Kegong's Landscape Painting

Guo Xi said in “Lin Quan Gao Zhi” that “mountains take water as their blood,grass and trees as their hair,and mist and clouds as their charm.Therefore,mountains live with water,flourish with vegetation,and beautiful with mist and clouds.” It can be said that “cloud and water” is the vitality of landscape painting and the spiritual externalization of painters.Gao Kegong of the Yuan Dynasty developed his own characteristic “green hills and white clouds”schema on the basis of inheriting the “Mis Landscape”and the “rack”and “current wate”played an important role.This article mainly takes Gao Kegong’s three existing landscape paintings as the starting point,and first from the cloud and water images in landscape paintings,explains the spiritual core,pen and ink techniques,and picture composition contained in landscape paintings,thereby explicating the application of cloud and water painting in Gao Kegong’s landscape paintings.Gao Kegong’s cloud and water painting method is usually a combination of blank,outline and staining.Its form and artistic conception have the characteristics of “silence”,which is called “A still cloud” and “Static water”.These two are not completely static,but “silence”shows “quiet” and “leisurely” artistic conception,showing movement in stillness,and taking movement as vitality in painting.In addition,Gao Kegong’s cloud shows the meaning of developing in the direction of “thick” in the development process of his paintings,which is related to his artistic concept of “both form and spirit”.His type of water is intended to be vague,seeking for charm in the blank,and in the later stage,it is added with green rendering to increase a quiet realm.Gao Kegong was a real literati painter in the Yuan Dynasty,and his landscape paintings reflected his pure and secluded heart with the quiet and leisurely meaning of “cloud water”.At the end of this paper,combining with the creative experience,it is concluded that the painting method of cloud water’s white space does not focus on white space,but on “reality” to show “emptiness”,and the richness of the surrounding images to show the charm of cloud water’s white space.This process is not just based on theory and imagination,but requires the painter to be directly in the nature and draw from real scenes.Only with the accumulation of such sketching experience can he create the landscape in his heart.
