Vocabulary is the cornerstone in English learning,which is also prominent in amount and its regularity is not apparent.Moreover,there are requirements for students on their mastering the pronunciation,meaning,spelling and usage of vocabulary.What’ s more,most rural primary school English teachers tend to use a blackboard,textbooks,free talk,PPT(the PPT mainly focuses on teaching reading stories)and other simple modal teaching methods to teach vocabulary,making it difficult for students to concentrate on learning vocabulary for a long time.With the accumulation of negative emotions,students will lose interest in learning English vocabulary.In order to change this situation,the author tries to use a multimodal teaching model in vocabulary teaching,combining vocabulary teaching with cards,pictures,objects,music,videos,gestures,facial expressions,physical movements and the like to stimulate students’ various senses with multiple modalities,enhance their understanding of new words,deepen their impression of new words,and help them memorize words efficiently and accurately.In the research,the vocabulary teaching experiment lasted 11 weeks and involved new words selected from 5 Units in the English Textbook for the second semester of Grade 3.The research subjects were 1 0 2 students from two classes in the third grade,coming from a rural primary school in Jiangsu Province,of which 5 1 were from the experimental class,and the other5 1 were from the controlled class.The students’ English proficiency in the two classes was found to be similar through the pre-test.This thesis adopts both qualitative and quantitative research methods,using tests,questionnaires and interviews as experimental instruments.After the experiment,the author collected data and analyzed them with SPSS 2 6.0 to answer the two research questions:1.What is the effect of the Multimodal Teaching Model on the English Vocabulary Achievements of primary school students?2.What effects can multimodal vocabulary teaching have on students’ interests,motivations and attitudes towards vocabulary learning and teaching?The main findings are as follows:(1)Multimodal teaching model has positive effect on improving students’ English vocabulary achievements to some extent.(2)Multimodal vocabulary teaching has some positive effects on improving students’ interest and motivation towards vocabulary learning and teaching and has great positive effects on improving their attitudes towards vocabulary learning and teaching.In addition,this thesis presents some implications for teaching English.First,interest is the best teacher for students,and teachers should cultivate students’ interest in learning English as much as possible.Secondly,multimodal teaching can stimulate students’ interest,and teachers should accumulate as many modal resources as possible before teaching.Finally,it is important to rationally design and arrange modal resources according to different teaching objectives.
