Throughout the history of English literature,Joseph Conrad is undoubtedly a landmark figure.Victory tells about the emotional entanglement and conflicts between a group of foreigners, discusses the predicaments faced by these “outsiders” in the exotic environment of Malaysia as well as their pursuit of identification, conveying Conrad?s reflections on issues such as gender, race, class, and trauma. On the basis of previous research, this thesis, mainly utilizing the Theory of Psychosocial Development of Eric Erickson, the Identity Control Theory of Peter J.Burke, and the Trauma and Dissociation Theory of Philip M.Bromberg and supplemented by feminist criticism and post-colonialism criticism explores the construction and reconstruction of the protagonists? identity. The deep exploration of identification in Victory is not only Conrad?s reflection on his own identity, but also his deep concern for the moral concepts and values of the British society in Edwardian era.By exploring the theme of identity in Victory, this paper aims to expose various social ills and cultural conflicts hidden in the process of social transformation and the development of civilization, and provide new wisdom for family education, marital relations, racial and gender equality and the harmonious coexistence between people in a multicultural context. |
