Lotus is an aquatic herb that grows all over the world.From ancient times to the present,in many cultures,the lotus has been endowed with special connotation and significance by people.Among them,Buddhism is the most prosperous.Buddhism regards the lotus as the holy flower.In the Buddhist scriptures,the lotus is used to describe the Buddha,the Buddha and the Buddha.Finally,the lotus becomes the representative image of Buddhism.In the process of spreading Buddhism to the east,the lotus is also more and more popular among the Chinese people,and the lotus is also common in Chinese literary and artistic works.Among these artistic works,the image of the lotus in Dunhuang is unique.It has spanned nine centuries and dozens of dynasties.It has preserved the most complete lotus pattern in China.It is also on the Silk Road,a crossroad of multicultural intersection,and also the only way to spread Buddhism to the east,Therefore,the image of Dunhuang lotus not only contains the cultural connotations of ancient India,Buddhism,China and the Western Regions,but also integrates and innovates to form its own style and characteristics.It not only reflects the artistic style of China in different periods,but also reflects the influence of the spread of Buddhism to the East on Chinese art and aesthetics.The main content of this paper is divided into the following four parts:The first chapter mainly introduces the origin of the lotus image in Dunhuang.The lotus image in Dunhuang has a rich cultural background.Tracing back to its origin,ancient Indian civilization and Chinese civilization have injected the most important cultural source into its formation.The ancient Indian civilization gave birth to Buddhism,and the lotus is an extremely important plant image in the ancient Indian culture.The author combed the lotus image in the ancient Indian religion and literary works,summarized the symbols of the ancient Indian lotus image,which are the foundation of the formation of the Buddhist lotus image,thus deeply affecting the Dunhuang lotus image.In Chinese culture,there were abundant lotus images before the introduction of Buddhism.The author summarized the lotus images and their symbols in Chinese literature and art works before the introduction of Taoism,Confucianism,folk life and Buddhism.These symbols were inherited by the lotus images in Dunhuang.The most important cultural source of the lotus image in Dunhuang has been clarified,paving the way for subsequent research.The second chapter mainly introduces the lotus image in the Buddhist classics.Buddhism is one of the most important ideologies in Dunhuang area.Dunhuang art also focuses on the content of Buddhism.The lotus image in the Buddhist classics is the mother of the lotus image in Dunhuang.The author combed the descriptions related to lotus in Buddhist classics,summarized the relationship between the Buddhist world,key figures in Buddhism,and lotus in the text,and finally summarized the symbols of the Buddhist lotus image,laying a solid foundation for subsequent research on the lotus image in Dunhuang.The third chapter mainly introduces the lotus image in the Dunhuang Grottoes.The Dunhuang Grottoes are the largest and richest existing Buddhist art treasure house in the world,and the most dazzling existence in the Dunhuang culture.So this chapter starts with the grottoes,and combs and analyzes the lotus image from the perspective of space and time.From the perspective of space,from top to bottom,the author selected the most classical lotus images in the positions of caisson,herringbone slope,Buddhist niche,story painting,floor,etc.,and interpreted them,and analyzed the characteristics and meanings of lotus images in different spatial positions in the grottoes.From the perspective of time,the author extracted the lotus images with the most distinctive characteristics of the times from the Dunhuang Grottoes in dozens of dynasties to interpret,combined with the history,politics,and the development of Buddhism in Dunhuang,and analyzed the characteristics and connotation of the lotus images in Dunhuang in different periods,as well as the people’s understanding of Buddhism expressed by the lotus images in Dunhuang in different periods.The fourth chapter is the end of this article.According to the previous article,the author summarizes the aesthetic connotation of the Dunhuang lotus image.From the perspective of Buddhist world view,life view and art view,this paper analyzes how the Dunhuang lotus image represents the Buddhist understanding of beauty,and analyzes the beauty of the Dunhuang lotus image and the aesthetic feeling and experience it brings to viewers.
