| Jiu Chao and Jiu Lian were important figures in Guangdong painting in the late Qing Dynasty,and were the precursors of the Lingnan School of painting.Jiu Lian,a cousin of Jiu Chao,also learned a great deal from Jiu Chao in terms of painting,and their paintings were so influential that they are known in the painting world as ’Er Jiu’.As they both lived in the same era and had roughly the same experiences,they are studied as a whole.Their painting styles and artistic ideas were influenced by the changing historical environment of the late Qing dynasty,and Jiu Lian’s original technique of ’water and powder’ became a family of its own in the Chinese painting world,forming his own unique ’Jiu school’ style between inheritance and innovation.The article focuses on Jiu Chao’s and Jiu Lian’s boneless bird and flower paintings,examining their artistic styles and the reasons for their formation,and further examining and analysing the influence of Jiu Chao’s and Jiu Lian’s boneless birds and flowers on my own work in the light of their lives and influences. |
