| Drama is a special part of Chinese literature, and translating excellent drama works into English helps to spread Chinese culture to the world. The Green Snake created in 2013 by renowned playwright Tian Qinxin is a great dramatic text with exquisite artistic techniques. The three classic images of human,Buddha and monster are recreated from a new perspective, and the protagonists are different from those in previous works. The first seven scenes are selected for translation, which is from Coming into the Man’s World to The Alcoholic Accident at the Dragon Boat Festival.Gestalt theory which holds that the whole is different from the sum of its parts, serves as the report’s theoretical framework. The principles of proximity, simplicity, closure and continuity are used in directing the translation process.Under the guidance of the principle of proximity, techniques of conversion and negation can make the translation more speakable;techniques of polysemy differentiation and action conversion are used for gap-preservation,which can render the characteristics and actions under the conduct of the principle of closure;techniques of omission, synonymous substitution and division and combination are employed to strengthen the speakability and understandability guided by the principle of simplicity;several techniques like addition and conversion are assumed under the instruction of the principle of continuity which can assure that the information conveyed is coherent and cohesive. The report has proved the applicability of Gestalt psychology principles, and appropriate techniques and skills can be found to deal with dramatic text. The translator hopes the report can contribute in some way to future studies on drama translation. |
