"A drop of water should be repaid with a spring".Influenced by our traditional cultural concepts,we should generously repay others’ help and favor. When others help us,we should be grateful and know how to repay them.Previous studies have mainly focused on the impact of favors on the "beneficiaries",but less on the impact of "beneficiaries" on the original "benefactors" with different degrees of return. This study attempts to explore the impact of different levels of return on "benefactors" and on the relationship between them.Four studies explored the effects of different degrees of return on the relationship between the benefactor and the beneficiary through experimental methods.Study 1 explored the effects of different degrees of return on the relationship between the benefactor and the beneficiary in a simulated scenario;Study2 explored the impact of different degrees of return on the relationship between the benefactor and the beneficiary in a real-life scenario;Study 3 explored the moderating effect of different intimacy levels of the benefactor and beneficiary on the influence of different return levels on the relationship between the benefactor and the beneficiary in a real-life scenario;Study 4 explored the moderating effect of the value of the initial benefactor on the relationship between the benefactor and the beneficiary in a real-life scenario.Come to conclusion:(1)Burden perception plays a mediating role in the impact of different levels of return on the relationship between the benefactor and the beneficiary. It is shown that excessive returns increase the burden perception of the benefactor, which leads to a lower willingness to seek help.(2)Intimacy regulates the influence of different degrees of return on the relationship between the benefactor and the beneficiary, which is shown in that when the degree of intimacy is familiar and the degree of intimacy is unfamiliar, excessive returns will increase the burden perception of the benefactor and reduce the benefactor’s willingness to seek help again.(3)The benefactor’s benefactor value regulates the impact of different levels of return on the relationship between the benefactor and the beneficiary. The benefactor’s benefactor value is smaller when it is larger than the benefactor’s benefactor value.Excessive returns will increase the benefactor’s burden perception and reduce the benefactor’s willingness to seek help again.(4)Excessive returns will bring lower status perception, more obligation perception and negative emotions to the benefactor.
