As a new type of question of college entrance examination English test in Hubei province in the year of 2019,high school students will face a series of problems such as not knowing how to develop ideas and how to stay align with the reading passage when conducting continuation writing.Although a variety of study has been conducted,a systematic one is needed. This study takes errors in continuation writing as research subject to study the possible relationship between errors and the level of continuation writing, the possible relationship with class type and gender by adopting case study, comparative study and data analysis. It has been found that the liberal arts students and the science students demonstrate certain difference in the continuation writing errors, indicating that the mistakes made in continuation writing are related to the class type; But contrary to popular belief, liberal arts students aren’t better at writing than science students, even though they have higher English proficiency. In addition, the type of error in continuation writing is not related to gender.Specifically, the two classes showed the same performance in syntactic errors, technical specification errors and other errors, but there were some differences in lexical errors.Although both classes made mistakes in verbs, the liberal arts class was more likely to make mistakes in nouns and subject-verb agreement, while the science class was more likely to make mistakes in determiners and prepositions. In addition,it has been found that students tend to make errors in the following situations: incomplete description of the plot, inaccurate description of the character, the content of the continuation not conforming to the logic of the two opening sentences of paragraphs, the language not conforming to the narrative style, and the language lacking enough richness and coherence. This study provides some tailored teaching strategies for high school English teachers: closely follow the theme and seek for bright line and dark line of the material;Focus on coherence and pay attention to the first two opening paragraphs and key words;Respect narrative style and ensure the accuracy and standardization of language;Accumulate descriptive vocabulary and keep the richness of language;Follow the teaching principle of continuation writing in order to narrow the gap between students in English writing.
