Dialogue Between Catholicism And Confucianism In The Late Ming And Early Qing Dynasties

In the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties,the cultural and ideological dialogue between China and the West —— the dialogue between Catholicism and Confucianism.On the one hand,the Catholic missionaries represented by Matteo Ricci used the "localized" belief and theological missionary route and interpreted the Catholic belief and theology with Chinese Confucian classics and ideological resources.In order to make the Chinese people more likely to identify and accept the Catholic belief,On the other hand,after being exposed to Catholic beliefs and theological contents brought by Catholic missionaries,Chinese Confucian scholars interpreted Chinese Confucian classics from a new perspective,in order to distinguish the correctness of Catholic missionaries’ remarks and make a choice of belief in their own hearts.The understanding and acceptance of Catholic belief and theology by Chinese Confucian scholars and how to treat the relationship between Confucianism and Catholicism are the key issues in the study of the dialogue between the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties.Xingyao Zhang(1633-after 1715)between Ming dynasty and early qing is a historian,is also a Catholic Confucian scholar,he had written many Catholic books.He continued the comparative study of Confucianism and Catholicism such as Guangqi Xu,Zhizao Li,and Tingyun Yang,further carried out the research line of mutual interpretation of Confucianism and Catholicism,and promoted an in-depth dialogue between Confucian culture and Catholic faith culture.Xingyao Zhang inherited and developed the Catholic theory of "supplementing Confucianism and abandoning Buddha" put forward by Matteo Ricci and Guangqi Xu,and clearly put forward the theories of "Catholicism Coalesces Confucianism","Catholicism Complements Confucianism" and "Catholicism Surpasses Confucianism",and his life and writings provided important clues for the study of dialogue between Catholicism and Confucianism in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties.The theory of "Catholicism Coalesces Confucianism " mainly discusses the content that Catholic belief thought and Confucianism conform to each other.The theory of " Catholicism complements Confucianism " mainly discusses the content that Catholic belief thought complements Confucianism.The theory of " Catholicism transcends Confucianism " mainly discusses the content that Catholic belief thought transcends Confucianism.Xingyao Zhang affirmed the positive significance of Catholicism,believe that the Catholic faith can play a positive role in the development of society and mankind,rather than negative and negative influence.Taking history as a mirror,the real cultural and ideological dialogue event in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties has left a profound scene in the history of global cultural dialogue and exchange,provided a new way for cultural and religious dialogue,which still has reference significance for our current era of global dialogue.
