| The secondary school period is an important stage of physical development and psychological maturation for adolescents. As natives of the Internet, the main platforms for adolescents to obtain information, interact and communicate, and express themselves are various social networking sites. Some studies have shown that passive social networking site use and self-objectification can make adolescents, especially girls, less satisfied with their bodies and affect their psychological health.According to studies, body dissatisfaction may negatively affect an individual’s mood and sense of self-worth,and may even trigger unhealthy eating. Therefore,it is relevant to focus on,prevent and intervene in adolescent body dissatisfaction. Therefore, helping secondary school girls to improve their body satisfaction is important for their adaptive development. This study was divided into two studies: Study I and Study II.Study 1 investigated the relationship between passive social networking site use and body dissatisfaction among secondary school girls and the role of self-objectification through the Surveillance Use Scale,Objectified Body Awareness Scale, and Negative Body Self Scale among 517 secondary school students in S.The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between passive social networking site use and body dissatisfaction among secondary school girls and the role of self-objectification in this study.Based on the results of Study 1,Study 2 designed a self-objectification group counseling program, recruited and screened subjects through posters, randomly divided subjects into two groups of subjects, experimental and control, and conducted 8group counseling sessions in the experimental group, with 3 measurement times(pre-test,post-test,and follow-up)as within-subject variables and group(experimental, control)as between-subject variables, and conducted a repeated measures ANOVA to investigate whether self-objectification group counseling can improve body satisfaction among secondary school girls. The results of the study were as follows.(1)There were significant differences in passive social networking site use among secondary school girls by grade;significant differences in self-objectification by grade and BMI;and significant differences in body dissatisfaction by grade, being an only child, and BMI.(2)There were significant positive correlations between passive social networking site use and self-objectification and body dissatisfaction among secondary school girls, respectively;there were significant positive correlations between self-objectification and body dissatisfaction among secondary school girls.(3)Passive social networking site use of secondary school girls was a significant positive predictor of body dissatisfaction, and indirectly predicted body dissatisfaction of secondary school girls through self-objectification.(4)Self-objectification group counseling is effective and feasible in improving the level of self-objectification and thus body dissatisfaction among secondary school girls, and the counseling effects are sustainable and stable over time. Conclusion: Self-objectification partially mediates the relationship between passive social networking site use and body dissatisfaction among secondary school girls;the implementation of a self-objectification group counseling intervention program can effectively reduce their level of self-objectification and further reduce the level of body dissatisfaction among secondary school girls, which has positive implications for the reduction of secondary school girls’ self-objectification and body dissatisfaction levels, and also provides a useful reference for other similar mentoring programs provide useful references. |
