Japan’s Overseas Grand Tour is unique among the educational trips in the world. It started before World War Ⅱ,experienced wartime stagnation, and gradually recovered and developed after the war. After World War Ⅱ,Japan vigorously promoted Overseas Grand Tour, which was one of its important measures to cope with the era of internationalization, showing Japan’s awareness of self-positioning in the multicultural world. From 1945 to 2001,Japanese overseas study trips experienced a long time of preparation and attempt, and eventually formed a large scale popular in Japanese public high schools.Based on the perspective of tourism history, this paper makes an in-depth investigation and analysis of the history of Japan’s Overseas Grand Tour and related issues from 1945 to 2001 by combing the original materials such as "Grand Tour News".The first part examines the historical background of Japan’s overseas study Tours after World War Ⅱ and points out that the East Asian study tour tradition and the Grand Tour culture formed in Japan before World War Ⅱ are its cultural background; The policies, economic development and social atmosphere of postwar Japan are the background of the era.The second part summarizes the development process of Japan’s Overseas Grand Tour after World War Ⅱ,which is divided into three stages: the preparation period, the pilot period of private high schools and the follow-up period of public high schools, and analyzes it based on specific cases and authoritative investigations. The third part explores the three concepts of "safety","economy" and "education" held by the National Grand Tour Research Association of Japan,a public welfare foundation, and summarizes the experience and lessons. The fourth part concludes that the overall strategy of Japan’s Overseas Grand Tour after World War Ⅱ is to prevent students from losing their subjective consciousness and sense of national cultural identity in the process of experiencing different cultures, and to enhance international understanding and build a good national image through Overseas Grand Tour. The author also tries to explore the internal contradiction between Japan’s overall national strategy at that time and its historical understanding. The fifth part considers the realistic enlightenment of the development of Japan’s Overseas Grand Tour to the development of our country’s study tour after World War Ⅱ.At the level of concrete implementation,it starts from the dimensions of policy guarantee, public opinion atmosphere, research safety, funding issues and educational themes. In the aspect of national strategy,it is believed that we should pay attention to strengthen students’ local consciousness and establish cultural confidence when carrying out overseas study tour.By accelerating the promotion of overseas study tour and other forms of educational exchange, can cultivate the country with international vision of talents; The sound and rapid development of overseas study tour is of great value in demonstrating a good national image and promoting mutual learning among civilizations. On the whole, the period from 1945 to 2001 studied in this paper should be regarded as the "foundation era" of Japan’s Overseas Grand Tour after World War Ⅱ,from scratch to existence, from preparation to attempt, from sporadic to popularization. As a part of world tourism history, the experience and lessons in the development of Japan’s Overseas Grand Tour after World War Ⅱ,or have certain reference significance for the development of study tour of our country.
