Xu Donglin is a senior artist in Jiangxi Province,focusing on oil painting creation for more than 40 years,and has a unique understanding and expression of oil painting creation.In his creative practice,Xu Donglin combines the concepts of traditional Chinese culture and Western modern thought,while depicting natural objects "real" and "simple",he also integrates the concepts of "expressiveness" and "imagery" into his own oil painting creation,reaching the realm of "outside the image",which not only enriches the expression form of oil painting,but also forms its own "Chinese and Western" painting style and characteristics.In his artistic career,Xu Donglin has worked hard to understand the spirit of traditional Chinese culture,actively inherited and carried forward the essence of Chinese culture,and played a pioneering and exemplary role in the development of Jiangxi oil painting in the past two decades.Based on this,this paper takes Xu Donglin’s painting art as the research object,starts from the perspective of "imagery",adopts various research methods such as philology,interview method,iconography,statistical analysis and other research methods to sort out Xu Donglin’s life experience,creative process and background of the times,review and summarize his painting concept,creative style and artistic influence,and analyze the useful thinking provided by his works on the creation of contemporary image oil painting.The article is divided into three chapters: the first chapter expounds Xu Donglin’s artistic creation process from his childhood experience and adolescent education as the starting point,and explains his artistic creation process through mentorship,multiple training,and continuous innovation.The second chapter expounds the transformation process of Xu Donglin’s painting style through a detailed interpretation and analysis of a large number of materials and works,explores the concepts of "photo" and "freehand" in Xu Donglin’s works,and explores the characteristics of "traditional culture" and "image expression" in his paintings.Chapter 3 provides an objective evaluation and overview of Xu Donglin’s artistic achievements and their influence in the art world,and summarizes the artistic value and innovative spirit embodied in his paintings.
