Nominalization is one of the most widely studied human language phenomenon.It is an important feature that distinguishes written English from spoken English.It has the function of making discourses coherent,precise,simplified and objective.As a formal written text,enterprise profiles contain a great deal of nominalization,which deserves attention.The reason why this study chooses enterprise profile as the research object is that enterprise profiles play an increasingly important role in the daily economic activities of enterprises.At present,a large number of achievements has been made in nominalization research.After reviewing the previous studies,it is found that studies on nominalization mostly focus on nominalization in English scientific,academic,legal,contractual texts,business letters and business news.However,there are few studies on nominalization in enterprise profiles,especially on nominalization translation,which leaves room for this study to explore.Based on grammatical metaphor in systemic-functional grammar,the present study conducts both quantitative research and qualitative research to explore nominalization in enterprise profiles and its Chinese-English translation strategies.This paper selects 50 enterprise profiles of English-speaking countries,50 Chinese enterprise profiles and their English versions,in which the English versions of Chinese enterprise profiles(ETC)and English enterprise profiles(EPC)establish a comparable corpus,while the Chinese enterprise profiles(CPC)and their English versions(ETC)establish a parallel corpus.With regard to research tools,Tree Tagger is used to tag the English texts.ABBYY Aligner is used to align the Chinese enterprise profiles and their English versions sentence by sentence.Chi-square calculator is used to detect whether there are significant differences in comparable corpora.This study first explores the use of nominalization in ETC and EPC with Antconc in order to find out the differences between translators and native speakers in the use of nominalization and analyze the reasons.Secondly,the establishment of parallel corpus aims to put forward Chinese-English translation strategies of nominalization in enterprise profiles.The results analyzed show that(1)There are significant differences in nominalization usage between English versions of Chinese enterprise profiles and enterprise profiles written by native speakers.(2)Lexical nominalization is higher than clausal nominalization and verb nominalization is higher than adjective nominalization.(3)At the lexical level,there are statistically significant differences between translators and native speakers in the use of suffixation,quality nominalization and process nominalization.(4)At the clause level,there are statistically significant differences between translators and native speakers in the use of Indefinite to,That-clause and Wh-clause.(5)The differences in the use nominalization can be explained by language differences,the influence of the source texts,different thinking patterns and the lack of nominalization awareness.(6)As far as the translation strategies of nominalization are concerned,nominalization structures,subject-predicate structures,verb-object structures,serial verb constructions,prepositional phrases and clauses in Chinese can be converted into nominalization in Chinese-English translation process. |
