As a negative personality trait, neuroticism is characterized by a tendency to experience negative emotions. The high neurotic group has a stronger sensitivity to anxiety and a poorer ability to regulate.Evidence from neurophysiology has found that high neurotic individuals exhibit dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, such as decreased resting heart rate variability(HRV).To explore the relationship between HRV in anxiety state and neuroticism, and the intervention effect of HRV biofeedback training on state anxiety in highly neurotic populations, which is important for the regulation of negative emotion. In order to investigate HRV changes during the rest, anxiety, and recovery,as well as the relationship between HRV and neuroticism, study 1 using a Velten selfsentences procedure induce subject’s anxious state, and calculated the correlation between neuroticism scores and HRV using multiple correlations. The results showed that HRV in the anxiety stage was higher than those in the rest and recovery stages; In addition, neuroticism scores were significantly negatively correlated with resting HRV.Study 2 selected female college students with high neuroticism scores from study 1,and used biofeedback training to conduct a 10-day intervention. The HRV changes during the rest, anxiety, and recovery stages were compared before and after the biofeedback training intervention. The results showed that biofeedback training can improve individual’s resting HRV and HRV changes from resting state to anxiety. In summary, this study found that anxiety state induced by verbal stressors can cause HRV increase, and resting HRV was significantly negatively correlated with neuroticism scores; Moreover,HRV biofeedback training can modulate the vagal function of individuals with high neuroticism.
