| This paper uses the research method of combining philology and intellectual history to place You Shi-xi from the perspective of the development of Confucianism in Henan, examines You Shi-xi’s family life, lectures, and friends, the writing process, version, content and ideological value of his works, and discusses the image and historical status of You Shi-xi in the Ming and Qing dynasties. At the level of learning and thinking, the development of Neo-Confucianism and Yang Ming school in Henan was preceded by Cao Duan, followed by You Shi-xi,and then by Meng Hua-li,with You Shi-xi playing a historical role in carrying on the work of the former and the latter, and it was through You Shi-xi that Yang Ming school was spread and developed in Henan. You Shi-xi was born in Luoyang, and in his early years he became devoted to Wang Yang-ming’s ideology through reading the Instructions for Practical Living and Other Neo-Confucian Writings(Chuanxi Lu)and was subsequently taught by Liu Kui,Zhu De-zhi,Zhou Yi,and Huang Ji,the first generation of Wang Yang-ming’s disciples, and in his later years,he spent a long time in Luoyang teaching and propagating Wang Yang-ming’s philosophy of the mind. You Shi-xi,the founder of the Wang School in Henan,is recorded in some detail in his biographical documents The Little Book of the Proposed School and The Continuation of the Little Book of the Proposed School, which contain the ideas of You Shixi’s school of mind.At the level of the vehicle of thought,The Little Records of the Proposed Study is a collection of quotations and articles by You Shi-xi.The earliest version was carved during the Longqing period by donations from the Luoyang Youshi men.Later,Li Gen,You’s man, compiled the eight volumes into six volumes.During the Qing calendar year,Meng Hua-li,a member of You’s family, edited the two kinds mentioned above of You’s quotations and articles that were not included in the The Little Records of the Proposed Study into seven volumes of the The Continuation of the Little Records of the Proposed Study.During the reign of Emperor Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty,Cao Su-sun,a native of Luoyang, combined the six-volume The Little Records of the Proposed Study and the The Continuation of the Little Records of the Proposed Study into a book the Little Records of the Proposed Study Co-compilation,which was engraved by Qin Mao-lin of Luoyang Zhi County in the third year of Tang. These books contain scriptures, afterwords, general explanations of disciplines, doubts, miscellaneous writings, anecdotes, and private records. In terms of academic transmission,You Shi-xi’s thinking was profoundly influenced by the first generation of Wang Yang-ming’s disciples. This influence has led him to maintain an open attitude towards the various schools of thought that followed Wang Yangming. He is more concerned that the development of the latter school should return to the original intent of Wang Yang-ming.This is so as to continue Wang Yang-ming’s idea that there is nothing outside the mind and no reasoning outside the mind.In his later years,he shifted from his earlier practice of sitting in silence to the practice of daily physical evidence. At the level of historical influence,on the one hand, the biographical literature of the Ming and Qing dynasties writes favorably about You Shi-xi.This phenomenon is a recognition by later generations of scholars of You Shi-xi’s status as a descendant of the royal family and a propagator of mentalism. On the other hand,You Shi-xi spent the latter part of his life in Luoyang, actively developing and propagating Yang Ming school. This positively impacted the development of education, cultural heritage, and academic culture in the Luoyang area.In addition, the two manuscripts The Little Record of the Proposed Study and The Little Record of the Proposed Study, which contain the thoughts of You Shixi, are of great documentary value, providing valuable historical information for future generations of scholars to study You Shi-xi’s life and thoughts,as well as the development of culture, education and study halls in Luoyang. |
