As China’s modernisation continues,the ageing of society deepens and the problem of empty nesters becomes more and more serious.Paying attention to the huge number of empty nesters and actively addressing the problem of empty nesters is a matter of social stability and the well-being of the people,and we must take it seriously.As a documentary medium,documentaries are a powerful tool for reflecting reality and exposing problems.However,there are very few documentary films and research results on the subject of empty nesters.The selection of documentaries on the subject of empty nesters with depth and warmth,focusing on the group of empty nesters who deserve attention,and using them to reflect the realities that deserve general consideration,can be an effective way to convey humanistic care,expose real social problems and attract the attention of the public.This paper is dedicated to exploring the video construction strategies and narrative expression paths of documentaries on the subject of empty nesters in the context of the creation of the graduation work "Returning Hope".The thesis is divided into five main sections.The introductory section discusses the background,purpose and significance of the study,and clarifies the research methodology and innovations to lay the foundation for the subsequent research.The first chapter defines the concept of documentary film on empty nesters from a theoretical perspective,and systematically reviews the history of documentary film creation and research on empty nesters at home and abroad.Based on the works themselves,the second chapter explores the creative characteristics of the audio-visual expression of documentaries on empty nesters from three aspects: picture modelling,camera scheduling and sound and picture expression,and reveals the inner symbiosis between the creative practice and theory of documentaries on empty nesters.The third chapter focuses on the narrative strategies in documentaries about empty nesters,and analyses the strategies of the works on this subject in terms of narrative structure,choice of narrative perspectives and the use of narrative techniques.The fifth chapter takes a concluding and reflective perspective.Chapter 5,from the perspective of summary and reflection,analyses and sorts out the perceptions and experiences in the research and creation practice,reflects on the short comings and mistakes,and sorts out the value of documentary and social on empty nesters.
