As an important poet and literary critic in the history of Western literature,Baudelaire lived not only in a period of ebb in the European Romantic literary trend, but also in a period of intersection between the Western aesthetic spirit and modernity.Standing at the crossroads of Western literary development,Baudelaire inherited the charm of Romantic literature and developed modernist literature in both literary creation and artistic thought. This article attempts to discuss the characteristics of Baudelaire’s post-Romantic poetry in the theoretical perspective of modernity against the historical and cultural background of the transformation of Western culture in the 19 th century. The article is divided into six parts, with four chapters for discussion. The introduction section explains the research purpose and significance, and focuses on summarizing the research status of scholars at home and abroad on Baudelaire’s modern aesthetic thought. It is found that their research always involves the relationship between Baudelaire,Romanticism, and modernity, but the relevant discussions are mostly scattered and not systematic. The first chapter provides an overview of the relevant characteristics of modernity through a systematic reading of the relevant theories of modernity at home and abroad, and finds that modernity can be used as a theoretical background for the correlation between romantic poetry and Baudelaire’s poetry. It then combs through the lyric poetry of the nineteenth century, from romantic poetry to Baudelaire poetry, both readers, authors, and lyric poetry itself. Therefore,in the vision of modernity,Baudelaire neither simply advocated romanticism nor simply abandoned romanticism, but chose among romanticism, distinguished between rational factors and paradoxical elements, and developed his own post-romantic poetics. The second chapter mainly discusses the expression of Baudelaire’s post-romantic poetic theory in the dimensions of time and space.Time and space are important factors of modernity. In terms of experiencing time and space,Baudelaire’s poetry inherits the nostalgia consciousness of romantic poetry in experiencing time, and the nostalgia for hometown in experiencing space. However, the modern emotions that Baudelaire developed in experiencing time and space go beyond romanticism.Baudelaire’s poetry,in terms of time, moves away from the hollow present of romantic poetry that nostalgically remembers the past, and towards the heroic present of urban reality;in terms of space,it moves away from the pastoral nature of romantic poetry and towards modern cities. The third chapter mainly discusses the unique perspective of the fl(?)neur in Baudelaire’s post-romantic poetic theory. The perspective of the fl(?)neur seems to be borrowed or imagined from a solitary stranger, which compensates for the poet’s inner loneliness. The fl(?)neur provides us with a new perspective on the importance of urban crowds, exploration of urban space, and research on aesthetic modernity issues.Chapter Four mainly discusses the unique technique of allegory in Baudelaire’s post-romantic poetic theory. As a allegorist,Baudelaire makes his poetry a special form of language.Compared to the organic unity of language in romantic poetry, his poetry emphasizes the fundamental split and incompatibility between content and form.It breaks free from the constraints of imitating nature and expressing emotions, and becomes a tool for the poet to face the real world and engage in speculation from a height of intuition that rational means cannot reach. The concluding section elaborates on the contribution, historical value, and contemporary significance of Paul Baudelaire’s post-romantic poetic theory.
