According to the Blue Book of Mental Health(2022),the prevalence of depression among Chinese adolescents has reached 15 to 20 percent, and many adults may have been depressed during their teenage years.Physiological, psychological and social factors may contribute to depression.Researcher have investigated the relationship between negative life events and found that negative life events were positively correlated with depression, and could predict future depressive symptoms to some extent(Burton et al.,2004;Ge et al.,2006;Phillips et al.,2015).According to the diathesis-stress model proposed by Monroe and Simons(1991),the interaction between negative life events and personal characteristics lead to depression.Individuals’ responses to negative life events vary across their personal characteristics, thus, leading to differences in depression.Previous studies have found that negative emotion regulation strategies are closely related to depression(Chen Haiyan et al.,2012)and social support can protect individuals from the negative effects of negative life events. Most previous studies have explored the role of coping styles, which often include cognitive and behavioral strategies,in the relationship between negative life events and depression. However,Beck believed that depression was due to individual cognitive biases.Depressed people often interpret events in a negative way and hold negative views on themselves, the world and the future, thus forming the susceptibility to depression(Beck.,1964).Therefore,it may be more appropriate to explore the influence of negative life events on depression from the perspective of negative emotion regulation strategies and the buffering effect of social support on the association between negative emotion regulation strategies and depression. To sum up,this study recruit xxx adolescents to explore whether the influence of negative life events on depression is realized through negative emotion regulation strategies, investigate whether there are significant differences in the mediating effect of negative emotion regulation strategies under different levels of social support, and further develop prevention and intervention programs to promote the healthy development of adolescent mental health. This study consists of two sub-studies.In the first study,we recruited 1,638 students from a middle school in Chongqing, aiming to understand the differences in demographic variables of negative life events, negative emotion regulation strategies, social support and depression, the mediating role of negative emotion regulation strategies and the moderating role of social support.Based on the results of the first study,32 middle school students were randomly divided into two groups, the experimental group(n = 16)and the control group(n = 16).The intervention lasts for four weeks, twice a week, each time about 60 minutes. The control group receives no treatment.Data were analyzed after the intervention. The aim of the intervention is to explore the intervention effect of group counseling of cognitive model on adolescent depression and whether it can alleviate adolescent depression by reducing the frequency of negative emotion regulation strategies. The research conclusions are as follows:(1)In terms of gender, parents’ marital status and family status, negative life events, negative emotion regulation strategies, social support and depression have significant differences.(2)Negative life events significantly positively predicted depression, and negative emotion regulation strategies played a partial mediating role between them.(3)Social support can moderate the mediating effect of life events on depression in adolescents, but the moderating effect is only significant in adolescents with low social support.(4)Cognitive group counseling has a significant effect on adolescent depression. After the intervention, the negative emotion regulation strategies and depression scores of the experimental group were significantly lower than before the intervention, and were also significantly lower than before the intervention at the follow-up test, and also significantly lower than the control group.
