Translation Strategies For Passive Sentences In Meteorological Text From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation Theory

As a heatedly discussed global issue,climate change has significant implications for human health.The excerpts of this report are from Global Climate Change and Public Health,a book co-authored by Kent E.Pinkerton and William N.Rom.The book describes the current state of climate change and its effects on human health to raise public awareness of it.Chapters eight to ten of the book are extracted as the translation material.In the text,a large number of passive sentences are employed to present scientific facts and research methods,posing challenges to the translation.In consideration of the differences between English and Chinese passive sentences,the translator is supposed to prudently work on sentence structure and order to convey information accurately with idiomatic language.In this report,communicative translation theory put forward by Peter Newmark is selected and offers theoretical guidance to serve the translation of the source text.Audience-oriented language and accurate information is what the practice pursues as an effort to reach optimal communicative effects.This report consists of five chapters in total.Chapter one introduces the significance,purpose,and text overview.Chapter two details the translation process,including preparation,translation and post-editing.Chapter three presents the theoretical foundation and makes a comparison between English and Chinese passive sentences.Chapter four applies the communicative translation to the practice with specific cases.The case study summarizes the strategies for the translation and they are mainly divided into three categories: translated into Chinese active sentences by retaining the original subject,transforming the original subject into object and adding the subject;translated into marked and unmarked passive sentences in Chinese;and translated into directive subject-absent and non-directive subject-absent sentences in Chinese.The last chapter concludes the major findings and limitations of the report.
