As the winner of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Japanese-British writer Kazuo Ishiguro has made remarkable contributions to the development of world literature. The deconstruction of a common ethical identity that everyone in his novel faces,on the other hand, has received inadequate attention. From the perspective of Ethical Literary Criticism, this article elaborates on the influence of the ethical environment on an individual’s ethical selection and the inevitable result of the deconstruction of ethical identity, thus providing a further supplement to the understanding of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels by analyzing the origin of the deconstruction of ethical identity, the impetus of the deconstruction of ethical identity, and the completion of the deconstruction of ethical identity. The article consists of five parts. The introduction part is a brief introduction to Kazuo Ishiguro himself, his works, the theory adopted in this article, and the research done at home and abroad, and at the same time clarifies the research value of this article. The first chapter studies the origin of the deconstruction of the protagonist’s ethical identity in the three novels, respectively, and the instability of the protagonist’s ethical identity due to the extrinsic dependence of the core ethical identity and the instrumental nature of the secondary ethical identity. The second chapter starts with the identity chaos and ethical selections under the ethical dilemma and studies the impetus for the deconstruction of the hero’s ethical identity. The third chapter is divided into two subsections, namely the adherence to the core ethical identity and social influence and the deconstruction process of the protagonist’s identity and its reasons. Finally, the paper concludes that various ethical selections and ethical dilemmas are faced by different classes and groups in different countries, which is a common social phenomenon.Fortunately, the deconstruction of ethical identity often provides a good opportunity for the construction of a new ethical identity,so individuals should learn to face their past and be brave enough to start a new life.Through the analysis of the deconstruction process of the ethical identity of the protagonists in the novels, this paper tries to help readers understand the causes of the common tragic fate of different protagonists in Ishiguro’s novels from multiple perspectives and the author’s view.In addition, this paper will also provide a desirable perspective for the study of the characterization connotation in Kazuo Ishiguro’s works. |
