Research On The Construction Of ICC Scale For International Volunteers

The primary focus of this thesis is the development of an intercultural communication competence scale for international volunteers.With the development of globalization,international volunteers have been an important part of international communication and cooperation.As one of the essential abilities of international volunteers,intercultural communication competence（ICC）has been paid more and more attention in the training of international volunteers.At present,there are few studies on the evaluation tools of ICC for international volunteers,and even fewer empirical studies on the development of ICC scale.Based on this,the thesis takes college students volunteers of the 19^thAsian Games as the main subjects,aiming at constructing the IVICCS,to serve the cultivation of international volunteers’ICC and make them better serve the international communication.The thesis aims to study the following three questions:（1）Based on literature review and interview of international volunteers,how does thesis construct an ICC scale for international volunteers?（2）Based on Classic Test Theory（CTT）,what is the reliability and validity of the ICC scale with the feature of international volunteers?（3）Based on Item Response Theory（IRT）,what is the reliability and validity of the ICC scale with the feature of international volunteers?In view of the research problems,the following three studies are carried out in the thesis.Study One:Construct an ICC scale for international volunteers.Based on the requirements of ICC of international volunteers proposed by the United Nations and the discussion and research of intercultural communication experts and international volunteer training instructors,the triangle ICC model of Chen and Starosta is selected to initially construct three evaluation dimensions of IVICCS.Descriptors were collected to construct a descriptor pool,and expert interviews were conducted to test the accuracy,relevance and classification appropriateness of descriptors,and an initial scale with good content validity was formed.Study Two:Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used to improve the reliability and validity of the initial scale.The initial scale was distributed to 156 international volunteers and collected the data.Based on Classic Test Theory,SPSS and AMOS statistical software were used to analyze the validity of the recovered data.The results of exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used to revise the scale descriptors for the first time,and the scale with high reliability and validity was obtained.Study Three:Combined with the Rasch model,the reliability and validity of the first revised scale were improved.The first revised scale was distributed to 232college international volunteers of Asian Games and collected the data.Based on Item Response Theory,Winsteps statistical software was used to analyze uni-dimensionality,description fit,reliability and overall performance of the scale.Through the second modification of the scale descriptors according to the analysis results,the scale with high reliability and validity was obtained.To construct a scale with higher reliability and validity,this thesis revised the initial scale twice,put the reliability and validity of the scale in the core position,and provided various types of validity evidence,to reduce the subjectivity in the scale construction process and improve the objectivity and science of the scale.The revised IVICCS has higher reliability and validity,including 30 descriptors.10 descriptors were included in each of the three dimensions of intercultural awareness,intercultural effectiveness and intercultural sensitivity.The IVICCS can be used as an assessment tool for international volunteers’ICC and is suitable for describing international volunteers who have certain requirements for ICC.It can serve in the selection and training of international volunteers,to better carry out international volunteer services.
