Consecutive Interpreting Strategies Of "Chinese Four-Character Expression" From The Perspective Of The Interpretive Theory

Interpretation is necessary in all kinds of international conferences,which promotes economic and cultural exchanges between countries.As an important window for foreign countries to learn about China’s development,the press conference has attracted worldwide attention.During the press conference of the 20th National Congress,Chinese four-character expressions are frequently used by Chinese officials,which may pose great challenges for the interpreter.Four-character expression is a unique structure of Chinese with a concise structure,high information density and melodious rhythm.For interpreters,it is difficult to deal with information density of four-character expressions in a limited time while ensuring the sentence structure.Therefore,the study of interpreting strategies of Chinese four-character expressions meets the practical needs.The Interpretive Theory holds that the purpose of the interpretation is to convey the communicative sense and the interpretation process includes comprehension,deverbalization and reformulation.In the study,the audio of the consecutive interpretation of the Press Conference of the 20th National Congress was converted into text and used to analyze the difficulties and strategies of four-character expression interpretation from the perspective of the Interpretive Theory.The study found that four-character expressions bring three difficulties to interpreters.The interpreter should,firstly,deal with high information density in a limited time;secondly,accurately convey the rich cultural connotation;and finally,ensure the melodious rhythm of the source text.Besides,this thesis summarizes some interpreting strategies of four-character expression used in this consecutive interpretation,including generalization,free interpreting,omission,restructuring and literal interpreting.Through the application of the Interpretive Theory in Chinese four-character expression interpretation,this thesis aims to help interpreters to deal with four-character expressions interpretation more flexibly and effectively.
