Attributive clauses are essential knowledge in high school English.Chinese students have difficulty learning English attributive clauses because of the significant differences between the two languages, which increases the difficulty for Chinese students to learn English attributive clauses.Students inevitably make lots of errors in mastering English attributive clauses.Although many scholars and teachers have done a lot of research on attributive clauses, they pay little attention to rural students.Based on the error analysis theory, this thesis takes 99 students from Cili county high school as the experimental objects. Two classes are divided into a control class and an experimental class. And the thesis conducts pretest and post-test and questionnaire analyses. This thesis focuses on the following questions:1.What types of errors exist in learning attributive clauses for rural high school students ? 2.What are the main reasons students often make errors in attributive clauses? 3.Will students’ errors reduce if teachers use analysis theory in English instruction? The research results are as follows: 1)Rural students often make five types of errors in learning attributive clauses: errors of relative pronouns, errors of relative adverbs, errors about the omission of relative words, errors about coherence between principal clause and subordinate clause and redundant component errors.2)These reasons for errors are language transfer, insufficient language input, overemphasis on language form,over-generalization,and lack of English foundation. Finally, three suggestions are put forward for teaching English attributive clauses in high school:use multiple forms of exercises to avoid the single form of output and input, use a variety of activities to stimulate students’ interest based on a student-centered classroom, expand cross-cultural teaching to help students understand differences.3)The post-test score of the experimental class is 2.91 points higher than that of the control class using the traditional teaching method, which shows that the error analysis has a positive impact on the students’ performance. This research analyzes the types and causes of errors. It aims to reduce the error rate and help students use attributive clauses better. It provides a reference for teaching English attributive clauses to high school students in rural areas. It also offers other English teachers some references for future related grammar research.
