| With the increasing popularity of computer-assisted instruction, the use of captioned video has gradually entered middle school classrooms and has received more and more attention. However, the current research basically discusses the influence of individual variables on incidental vocabulary acquisition(IVA),and there are few researches on the influence of the combination of subtitle type and vocabulary frequency on IVA.Therefore, this present study examines the impact of two different captioning conditions(grossed full captions(GFC)and grossed keyword captions(GKC))and word exposure frequency(5 times and 7 times)and the combination of these two variables on IVA of middle school students, the research questions guiding the study are as follows:1.What’s the effect of different captioning types(GFC & GKC)on incidental vocabulary acquisition?2.What’s the effect of different vocabulary exposure frequency(5 times and 7times)on incidental vocabulary acquisition?3.What’s the effect of different combinations of captioning types and vocabulary exposure frequency on incidental vocabulary acquisition? The present study explores four different combinations: GKC + Five occurrences(Group 1),GKC + Seven occurrences(Group 2),GFC + Five occurrences(Group 3),GFC + Seven occurrences(Group 4).In a boarding high school in Jiujiang,Jiangxi,100 high school students are selected.During the experiment, participants will watch video materials with different caption conditions and word exposure rates. After watching the video, they will be asked to immediately complete a vocabulary test of word form and meaning recall.By collecting experimental data and analyzing the data with SPSS 21.0 data processing system, the following results are obtained:1.When the exposure frequency of the target word is the same, different types of captions have a significant impact on IVA.When the vocabulary exposure rate was 7 times, the difference in vocabulary test results is statistically significant, and the score of group 4 is higher than that of group 2.When the vocabulary exposure rate is 5 times, there is a difference in vocabulary test results, and the scores of group 3 higher than group 1.It can be seen that the effect of watching the GFC group on IVA is significantly better than that of the GKC group.2.When the types of captions are the same, the number of encounters between the participant and the target word(5 times and 7 times)has no significant effect on IVA.Under the condition of GFC,the exposure rate of different words has no significant effect on IVA.At the same time, under the condition of GKC,the exposure rate of words has no significant effect on IVA.3.The results of pairwise comparison show that there is a significant difference between the scores of group 1 and group 3.Compared with groups 1 and 2,group 4has a better effect on incidental vocabulary acquisition.Pairwise comparisons of other variable combinations show no difference. It can be seen that the GFC group seems to achieve better vocabulary incidental acquisition effect. The results of this experimental study show that when learners are exposed to captioned video conditions and receive dual visual and auditory inputs, their IVA capabilities are significantly improved. |
