The thesis studies the three main characters Jane Eyre,Edward Fairfax Rochester and Bertha Mason from Charlotte Bronte’s autobiographical novel Jane Eyre and analyzes their duality in the plot development and covert progression in the novel respectively.Different from the image of “angel in the house” who yearns for a complete family in the plot development,Jane Eyre is a white woman who puts Mason in her colonial oppression in the covert progression.Rochester is a loyal supporter of Victorian institution of marriage in the plot development, but becomes a conspirator of Jane Eyre to deprive Mason’s power of discourse in the covert progression. In the plot development,Mason is a mad woman in the attic who is the barrier of love between Jane Eyre and Rochester. In the covert progression, she is a brave rebel. But she chose the wrong person to fight against. She lost her life and failed in her struggle.Based on Shen Dan’s theory of dual narrative progression, this thesis tries to reveal Bronte’s attitude towards the “angel in the house” in the plot development, but shows the sense of national superiority and colonial oppression of colonial women in the covert progression.
