| John Fiske’s positive and optimistic view of mass culture has reversed the theoretical direction of criticizing mass culture established by the Frankfurt School, providing a new way of thinking for the study of mass culture. He reinterpreted important areas of cultural research such as television culture, the art of daily life, and fan culture, and deeply explored the political potential of popular culture, which had a profound impact on the study of Chinese and Western culture. This article focuses on Fiske’s semiotic interpretation of popular culture, taking the symbolic resistance of the masses as a clue, and deeply analyzes the resistance strategies and political transformation potential of the masses against the dominant forces. This article is divided into four parts sections:The introduction covers the reasons for choosing this topic, the current state of research at home and abroad,as well as research methods and research ideas. The first chapter defines “mass” in Fiske’s theory of mass culture.Fisk adopted a different research approach from other cultural research theorists. He stood on the populist standpoint of anti elites, and made his own unique definition of the concept of "mass" using a unique ethnographic semiotic research method. He believed that the mass was a group of loyal subordinate relationships with producer attributes and resistance. The second chapter studies the main operational areas of mass symbolic resistance.Focusing on the two main micro fields of television text and daily life, this article explores the semiotic interpretation practice of cultural texts by the public through the analysis of four specific cultural texts: television text, beach, shopping mall, and jeans, and further explores the symbolic meaning construction of the public in this process. The third chapter explores the micro political potential of mass symbolic resistance.Fisk regards the body as a political extension, which simultaneously undertakes the mission of power discipline and resistance based on offensive and revelry strategies, and uses the pursuit of pleasure as a source of power for resistance.Fisk’s body view ultimately points to the exploration of the potential for mass political change, attempting to find the most effective way of political change from both radical and popular forms of change. The fourth chapter evaluates Fiske’s theory of mass culture.Fiske’s theory,on the one hand, has a theoretical contribution that cannot be ignored, and its forward-looking nature has laid the foundation for subsequent theoretical studies such as fan culture. At the same time,it provides a new perspective for the study of Chinese mass culture; On the other hand,Fiske’s theory of mass culture has limitations, replacing sociological analysis with semiotic interpretation, and to some extent,it has fallen into populism. The conclusion part analyzes the background and reasons for Fisk’s research on mass culture, and summarizes the significance of Fisk’s research on mass culture, based on the current social situation in the United States during the late capitalist period. |
