On The Narrative Characteristics And Genre Significance Of Detective Novels In The Late Qing Dynast

The detective novel is a cultural product in Western capitalist society,which is not available in China.This genre of novel appeared on Late Qing literary world around the time of the "revolution in fiction",and then quickly became respected.The end of the Qing Dynasty,more than ten years,is the flourishing period of the translation of detective novels,but also the beginning of new novelists trying to create detective novels.But the formation of Chinese detective novels not only benefited from Western detective novels,another source of traditional chivalrous detective novels.The two genre of novels collided at the historical intersection of the late Qing Dynasty,giving rise to the Chinese detective novel.From many texts,we can see that both translated detective novels and original detective novels reflect a mixture of Chinese and Western narrative features.This "mixture" is not a mere cross-reference within the texts,but is linked to the context of the times,the political situation and the urban culture.Therefore,by exploring the narrative features of detective novels and their background causes in the late Qing Dynasty,it is not only possible to restore the historical aspects of the genre at its inception,but also important to reveal the special literary significance of this representative novel genre in the context of the changing times.This paper is divided into three chapters to discuss:Chapter one: begins with an overview of the development of Western detective novel in the 19 th century and its translation into China.Next,explore the roots of the rise of detective novels in the late Qing Dynasty.And briefly describe the evolution of chivalrous detective novel and its decline.Finally,it discusses the reality of the historical intersection of the two genres of novels: the chivalrous detective novel and the detective novel.Chapter two: On the premise of returning to the historical scene,structuralism narratology is used to analyze the narrative features of typical late Qing dynasty detective novels in three aspects: character function,narrative sequence and narrative perspective,and discusses the relationship between urban culture and modernity and detective novels in an attempt to show the transitional and hybrid nature of late Qing dynasty detective novels and reveal the literary-historical significance behind their narrative features.Chapter three: Discussing the different aspects of detective novels in the development of the late Qing Dynasty.Taking the translations and creations of two translators and three novelists,Zhou Guisheng,Chen Jinghan,Lin Shu,Dongting Hua Mingcun and Nanfeng Tingchang,as case studies,we examine the multidimensional aspects of detective novels in the late Qing Dynasty,and try to show through the medium of detective novels how ideals and reality,advanced and backward,pursuit and criticism were reflected in the pens of intellectuals in the late Qing Dynasty.
