The role of phonology in visual word recognition has been verified by many studies. However, phonological information contains many layers, such as syllables, segments and phonemes. In the previous research on the function of phonological information, one of the phonological layers was often chosen to discuss in isolation, and there was a lack of systematic discussion of different phonological layers, especially in a deep orthographic language like Chinese,at which layer phonological information can play a significant role is still unclear. In the research field of visual word recognition, the functions of different phonological layers need to be further refined. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore at which layer phonological information plays an important role in Chinese visual word recognition. In experiment 1,the masking priming paradigm was used to investigate whether the phonological information of syllables, segments and phonemes in Chinese word recognition can be activated. The first experiment was designed as a single factor and four levels(conditions:syllable condition, segment condition, phoneme condition and control group). The results showed that the phonological information of syllables, segments and phonemes can be activated in Chinese visual word recognition.Experiment 1 found the priming effect under the condition of phoneme priming, while the phoneme layer includes not only initials, but also finals and tones. Therefore,in Experiment 2,the masking priming paradigm was used to further explore the role of finals and tones in Chinese visual word recognition. The experimental design was a single factor and three levels(conditions:finals condition, tone condition and control group). The results showed that the priming effect is not significant under the two priming conditions: final condition and tone condition. To verify the distinctions in the activation of phonological information in different experimental tasks,Experiment 3 used phonological judgment tasks to explore the activation of different layers of phonological information. The experimental design was a single factor containing five levels(conditions: segments condition, phonemes condition, finals condition, tones condition and control groups). The results showed that segment and phoneme information are activated in the phonological judgment task and can interfere with the judgment of the subjects. The results of above three experiments suggested that different layers of phonological information can be activated in the process of Chinese visual word recognition, including the syllable, segment and phoneme. Both the naming task and the phonological judgment task can activate the segment and phoneme information, but the effect of initial condition is only marginal in the phonological judgment task that does not need pronunciation. In addition, the phonological function is the result of phoneme coordination, and the higher the phoneme overlap, the greater the phonology work. When a single information(phoneme)works,it will be adjusted sequentially. The initial is useful, but the final and tone are useless.
