Conon was an Athenian general of the classical period, who lived during the Peloponnesian and Corinthian wars.Around 414 B.C.,Conon rose to prominence in Athens’ Sicilian expedition, and was subsequently chosen several times as general, playing an important role in Athenian history. However, the defeat of the Battle of the Sheep River Mouth forced Conon to go into exile in Cyprus. After the Peloponnesian War,the Athenian Empire collapsed and democracy declined. In contrast,Conon defeated Sparta at the Battle of Knidos and rebuilt the Athenian long wall and fleet, winning the recognition of the Athenian public and receiving extraordinary honors. In addition,Conon played a unique role in the relations between Greece and Persia in the classical period. At the same time, there are rich accounts of Conon in the writings of Xenophon,Diodorus, and Oxyrhynchia, and the orators Isocrates and Demosthenes also praised him. Therefore, this paper attempts to systematically discuss several aspects of Conon’s life, military and diplomatic activities, and influence on the Greek world, using a large number of classical historical sources and contemporary documents.Through studying a series of Conon’s military and diplomatic activities,we will analyze his outstanding contribution to the Athenian city-state as an Athenian military commander. This paper is divided into three main sections of research:The first part is the introduction, which mainly describes the significance of the selected topic, reviews the research results at home and abroad, and explains the basic structure and research methods of the paper and its innovations. The second part is the main text, which is divided into three chapters. The first chapter introduces the background of the time in which Conon lived, that is,the ancient Greek society from the second half of the 5th century B.C.to the beginning of the 4th century B.C.,His life was marked by the Peloponnesian War and the Corinthian War,He came to prominence in the late Peloponnesian War and played an important role during the Corinthian War.After the conclusion of the Peace of Antalcidas between Sparta and Persia, the Corinthian War came to an end and Conon’s political life came to an end.The second chapter discusses a series of military actions of Conon.During the Peloponnesian War,Conon was stationed at Naupactus to ensure that Athens’ naval base would not be lost to Sparta,he made an expedition to Corcyra to suppress the riots in the city, and he was blockaded in Mytilene and still kept sending messages to Athens, all of which show that he played an important role in Athens’ military operations. After the Battle of the Aegospotami,Conon went to Cyprus and contacted the Persian king, becoming Persian admiral.During this period,Conon participated in the Rhodes Revolution, winning a major stronghold in the Aegean Sea for both Persia and Athens;commanded the Battle of Knidos,a turning point in Conon’s military career, which deprived Sparta of its naval superiority;lobbied for the liberation of Asia Minor from Spartan control of many Greek The battle was the turning point of Conon’s military career, which led to the loss of Sparta’s naval dominance;Lobbying the city-states of Asia Minor to liberate them from Spartan rule;and the reconstruction of the Athenian wall and fleet,Attempting to revive the Athenian Empire. The third chapter analyzes the historical influence of Conon and evaluates his historical status.Conon’s series of military activities revived the Athenians and laid the foundation for the revival of the Athenian Empire;Conon,as the most important intermediary between Persia and Athens. He not only influenced the formation of the expeditionary army of Agesilaus, but also played an important role in the formation of the anti-Spartan alliance in Greece, which made all those hesitant city-states join it.The third part is the conclusion.Conon became famous in the Battle of Knidos and used Persian resources to revive the Athenian Empire, which gradually restored Athens’ influence in Greece,But the extraordinary honor given to Conon by Athens incurred Persian suspicion and discontent, which hastened his military career demise.
