| With the advent of the post-human era, body of people has become a hot topic for scholars. The changes in the body and the ethical crisis caused by it have implications for the present and future.Manjula Padmanabhan(1953-),a contemporary English science fiction writer in India, shows the hidden crisis under the progress of science and technology by describing the survival situation of human beings in the post-human era in his science fiction works.Manjula has become a unique presence in the history of Indian science fiction literature with its profound insight into human nature. This paper takes Manjura’s drama Harvest(1996),novel Escape(2008),The Island of Lost Girls(2015)and short story Exile(2013)as examples, focusing on the alienation of the body and its implicit gender, social and ethical issues by presenting various types of body,And discuss the solutions of Manjula to the above problems. In her science fiction works,Manjula described human cloning, cybernetics and other body forms.Although this is the product of technological progress,Manjula pays more attention to the hidden dangers of the disorderly development of science and technology to society and the country. The emergence of multiple body forms has led to gender ethics and social ethics. The gender ethics takes the sexualized body as the entry point to analyze the mapping and amplification of gender issues with the use of technology.Social ethics focuses on the diversified interaction between individuals and society, and analyzes the impact of politics, economy and other aspects on social order in the era of technology. In terms of gender ethics, reproductive technology not only subverts the natural law of human reproduction, but also further intensifies the problem of gender oppression. With the support of science and technology, men regard women as entertainment tools and optional items, which makes it more difficult for women to usher in liberation. In terms of social ethics, the emergence of multiple body forms has eroded the emotional and moral fields of human beings, and people have lost their proud emotional advantages, but cloned people have the ability to empathize. The phenomenon of totalitarianism has also become more prominent.Scientific and technological products have become the accomplices of violent rule in the hands of totalitarian rulers. The actions, language and even thoughts of national residents have been strictly controlled and disciplined. The First World also regarded the poor in the Third World as victims of their own development and national progress, and colonial oppression emerged in a more subtle way.The disorderly development of science and technology has led mankind to the path of being enslaved by science and technology.Manjula expresses the realistic connotation in the form of science fiction, and the fictional science fiction scenes in her works.Manjula not only stays at the level of raising problems, but also puts forward solutions to problems.First of all,she believes that women should get rid of the oppression of the patriarchal society, pursue their own values, and attach importance to the power of reproduction, rather than blindly wear the shackles of victims and fall into blind hatred.Gender integration is also an effective way to achieve gender equality.Secondly,in the face of the unequal relationship between spirit and body, she believed that the natural attributes of the body should not be ignored, and the natural desire of the body should be reasonably satisfied to highlight the vitality of life. Finally, human beings should also awaken the inner divinity and explore the divine love, goodness and other good human qualities.Manjula always puts people above technology and hopes to balance the development of science and technology in human life. Her discussion of physical problems caused readers to reflect on the ethical dilemma brought about by the development of science and technology, and to think about how to be human in the post-human era, which has important implications for the rapid development of science and technology at present. |
