| This is a Chinese to English translation report of the book Records on Yingjing Black Pottery(Excerpts).The excerpts mainly include the preface and the first two parts of the book,covering the significance of the compilation of the book,the important value of Yingjing black pottery,the geographical location,the historical development,as well as the products and sales.Records on Yingjing Black Pottery(Excerpts)involves multiple aspects and diverse text types,covering culture-loaded words,honorary titles,groups of four-character structures,parallel structures,sentences lack of logical connectives,paragraphs full of figures and paragraphs covering several aspects.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s theory,it can be divided into informative texts,expressive texts and vocative texts.Newmark believes that different types of texts should be translated with different translation strategies: semantic translation and communicative translation.Based on the analysis of the source text and Newmark’s Text Typology Theory,this report adopts specific translation methods for typical phenomena of the source text,and has the following findings:In this report,under the guidance of communicative translation for informative texts,the translator adopts the translation method of adding background information for culture-loaded words,to compensate the cultural knowledge that readers lack;the translator adopts the translation method of omitting repetition in paragraphs full of figures and splitting a paragraph containing several aspects into points,to present information intuitively and loose the reading burden of readers.Under the guidance of semantic translation for expressive texts,the translator adopts the translation method of explaining of honorary titles,to preserve the authority of the government and the method of paralleling of groups of four-character structures,to achieve a similar structural aesthetic in Chinese and English.Under the guidance of communicative translation for vocative texts,the translator adopts the translation method of omitting redundant information in parallel structures,to simplify and clarify the texts and persuade the readers in a concise way;and the method of adding logical connectors between sentences,to make the logic relations more implicit and be better accepted by the target language readers.This report summarizes the textual features of the source text of Records on Yingjing Black Pottery(Excerpts),proposes suitable translation methods under the guidance of Text Typology Theory,proving that Newmark’s Text Typology Theory has some guiding effect on the translation of intangible cultural heritage texts.The conclusions and findings in this report are expected to have some implications for the translation of intangible cultural heritage texts. |
