Predicaments And Solutions Of Interpreters In Ayi Kwei Armah’s The Resolutionaries

Ayi Kwei Armah is a well-known writer from West Africa.Being a productive writer,Armah has completed eight novels to far.Armah calls for Africans to absorb African cultural heritage dating back to ancient Egypt and recreate their own history in order to overcome the African historical perspective shaped by Western colonization and reclaim cultural confidence.As a result,his works focus on addressing present concerns in Africa through rebuilding African history.This is consistent with the opinions of Afrocentrists like Cheikh Anta Diop.Afrocentrism emphasizes addressing issues from an African perspective and standpoint,with a focus on African cultural subjectivity and historical outlook.This theory urges African people to identify the root causes of social problems in Africa,seeking solutions from history and traditional culture to promote African development.Armah’s views align with this perspective.Establishing a common African language could be one approach to foster African unity and cultural freedom.This is also the subject of Armah’s most recent novel,The Resolutionaries.This work tells the story of a group of African interpreters aiming to shed their role as “accomplices” of neocolonialism by combining ancient Egyptian characters with language elements commonly used in contemporary Africa.This not only helps them clarify personal identity,but also gives them direction to contribute to the larger objective of African cultural revival.This thesis utilizes the framework of Afrocentrism to explore the predicament faced by African interpreters with African subjectivity in Ayi Kwei Armah’s The Resolutionaries and solutions proposed in it.Chapter one provides a brief introduction of Ayi Kwei Armah and his work The Resolutinaries,as well as a summary of the existing research on the novel.Chapter two discusses Afrocentrism and the subject of African languages in its context,focusing on the ideas of the representative figure Cheikh Anta Diop and highlighting Armah’s applications and contributions to Afrocentrism,who is highly influenced by Diop.Chapter three examines the personal dilemmas faced by the interpreters as ordinary Africans,the group dilemmas caused by their profession,and the African language issues reflected in the group dilemmas,arguing that the novel’s portrayal of African interpreters actually reflects a deeper dilemma of cultural disconnection.Chapter four demonstrates how the novel’s characters learn about African history and culture,develop a collectivist spirit within the community,discuss the steps towards developing a common language,and finally escape from the dilemmas they face,demonstrating a high degree of Afrocentricity in their thinking.Chapter five is the conclusion,summarizing the novel’s various levels of difficulties and answers,emphasizing that The Resolutionaries is a practical guide.It outlines the way forward for people’s union and the dismantling of colonial shackles in order to achieve real development in Africa.
