The E-C Translation Report Of Covestro Half-Year Financial Report 2022 (An Excerpt)

In recent years,international exchanges and cooperation have become increasingly close.Reflecting the financial situation and operating results of an enterprise,financial report is an important channel for investors to assess the performance of an enterprise.The importance of translating financial reports is therefore highlighted.Covestro is a world-leading supplier of high-tech polymer material.Taking "Covestro Half-Year Financial Report 2022" as the object of analysis and guided by Peter Newmark’s Text Typology Theory,semantic translation and communicative translation,this report analyzes 28 cases in the translation practice.First of all,the translator analyzes the lexical features of the source text from three aspects: technical terms,acronyms and abbreviations,and pronouns.The expressions of technical terms are relatively fixed,so the translator translates them into Chinese by consulting professional dictionaries and other materials and combining them with given contexts;different acronyms and abbreviations have different degrees of popularity among target readers,according to which the translator applies zero translation,mixed translation or free translation to translate them into Chinese;when translating pronouns into Chinese,the translator clarifies the objects to which they refer to so as to avoid semantic ambiguity,while the first-person pronouns,which are tasked with bringing readers closer in financial reports,can be translated by applying literal translation to achieve the communicative purpose.Then,the syntactic features of source text are structurally complex and logically complicated.When dealing with long sentences with complex structures,the translator re-defines the subject-predicate relationship by sorting out the relationship between the sentence components to make the translated language conform to Chinese norms;when there are implicit logical relationships within a sentence or between sentences,the translator translates the sentence(s)into Chinese by applying division or combination accordingly,namely re-adjusting the sentence boundaries.In summary,the translation practice of similar texts can be guided by semantic translation and communicative translation,and it is hoped that that this report will be helpful and inspiring to the translation practice of financial report.
