The Song dynasty was a period of peak cultural development in China.On the one hand,the unique genre of notes achieved unprecedented development during the Song dynasty,as reflected not only in the dramatic increase in the number of people writing them and the volume of notes,but also in the remarkable increase in their historical and academic value.On the other hand,the Song dynasty was also a golden period in the development of painting,a crucial stage in the stylistic turnaround of Chinese painting,when all social classes,led by the literati and scholars,were widely involved in various painting activities,making the Song dynasty a highly developed painting culture.The Song notes,as private writings in which the Song people recorded what they had seen,heard,thought and learned,contain a wealth of historical material on anecdotes,painting criticism,and painting discernment,and are of great and irreplaceable value in understanding the development of Song painting and the Song people’s conception of painting.In recent years,the increasing refinement and publication of Song notes has laid a good foundation for the study of Song notes and painting history,but the current academic community is still not thorough enough in the excavation and collation of Song notes and painting history,and the examination of the content of painting history is not deep enough.This paper will collect as much historical material on painting from Song notes as possible,and on the basis of collating and classifying them,study their historical sources and the writing of specific characters,in an attempt to present a complete picture of the content of Song notes historical material on painting and its value in painting history.The second chapter provides an overview of Song notes on the history of painting from a macro perspective,firstly examining the basic situation of all Song notes containing historical material on painting,on the basis of which these notes are divided into four categories according to their density of recording historical material on painting,and from which three representative notes are selected to give examples,with the aim of visually presenting what historical material on painting was recorded in Song notes and how it was recorded.The third chapter is one of the core chapters of the paper,namely the classification and preliminary analysis of the content of Song notes on painting.The paper divides Song dynasty notes into six categories: anecdotes,appreciation and commentary,evidence and argumentation,records and collections,theoretical knowledge,and aesthetic thought,and discusses each category in relation to a specific painting text,analyzing the objective painting information and subjective painting ideas conveyed therein,and in the process exploring the value of painting history.The fourth chapter is an analysis of the sources of Song notes on painting.The paper identifies the sources of the historical sources of painting by examining the preface to the notes,specific passages of the historical sources of painting,and the biographical experiences of the authors of the notes,and then divides the historical sources of painting into first-hand and second-hand materials and discusses them separately,and finally analyses the complexity of the sources of the historical sources of painting by taking an example of a repeatedly mentioned allusion to painting in Song notes.The fifth chapter is a case study of characters,taking Li Gonglin,a character mentioned frequently in Song notes,as an example,and analyzing specific painting historical materials according to his different identities in Song notes,trying to extract from them Li’s painting style and character traits,and comparing the similarities and differences between Song notes and painting history monographs in recording the same person,so as to summarise the narrative characteristics of Song notes painting historical materials.The sixth chapter is a systematic summary of the value of Song notes and painting historical materials in painting history.This paper examines the significance and value of Song notes for the study of painting history from the perspectives of both historiography and painting research.The Song notes provide a wealth of new material and understanding for the study of painting history,and also promote the micro-narrative mode of painting history writing;at the same time,they also faithfully reflect the Song people’s cognition,sense and ideas of painting.Characterized as fragmentary,private and microscopic,the Song notes painting historical materials reveal to posterity the cultural landscape of painting among the different social classes of the Song dynasty and project a true picture of the prosperity of Song painting. |
