Critical reading is a kind of reading activity in which readers judge and evaluate the authenticity,validity and value of readings based on certain principles and standards.It mainly includes two levels of reading activities: the first level is to understand the meaning of the article,namely to understand the general idea and details of the article.The second level is to analyze and evaluate the attitudes and opinions conveyed by the article,so as to express the readers’ own opinions and attitudes.Based on the requirements of the English Curriculum Standards for General High School(2017 Edition)on the cultivation of students’ core English competence,this study conducts the teaching of critical reading strategies and aims to explore three research questions :1)What are the main critical reading strategies applied to the teaching of English reading in high school? 2)How should teachers design the teaching of critical reading strategies and apply them to high school English reading teaching? 3)After applying critical reading strategies to high school English reading teaching,how has the students’ English reading learning improved?This study takes 136 students from classes F and G of M Middle School in Gu Yuan City as research subjects.After two rounds of teaching practice,the same teaching content is taught in two different classes.With questionnaire,observation scale,interview,teaching log and teaching reflection as research tools,the teaching design is modified by the lesson study group observation and self-reflection,and then the teaching design of the second round lesson practice is formed.In order to improve teaching and the quality of English reading teaching,the author further reflects on the problems identified.By analyzing the results of classroom observation records,teaching logs,teaching reflection and so on,the author finds that the critical reading strategies applied to high school English reading teaching mainly include comment,preview,outline,question,distinguishing between facts and opinions,identifying the author’s writing attitude,reasoning judgment,evaluating people and events,etc.When designing practical lessons of critical reading strategies,teachers should consider the theoretical basis,objectives of reading classroom teaching,students’ real learning situation,use of reading strategies and classroom activities.After the application of critical reading strategies in high school English reading teaching,students’ interest in English reading learning has been stimulated,their thinking activity has been transmitted positively,and their confidence in English reading learning has been enhanced.Finally,the author points out that there are some limitations in this study,such as the single sample of the research subjects and the insufficient case study to deeply track the changes of students’ English reading learning.
