China has played a significant role in the international platform in recent years. As a result, traditional Chinese culture and related works have also attracted the attention from the world. As one of the most important means of cultural export, the translation of subtitled works, such as TV shows, films, and other forms which are adapted from classical masterpieces, have also aroused extensive discussions. In the process of translation, one of the obstacles is how to achieve the purpose of cultural transmission while meeting the special features of subtitling translation. This report is based on the C-E translation of the subtitles of a show which aims to explain and analyze two famous works: Journey to the West and Romance of the Three Kingdoms, both of which are among the four great classical Chinese novels and are treasures of traditional Chinese culture.Guided by Susan Bassnett’s concept of cultural translation, the translator completed the two tasks. The translator aims to explain the importance and necessity of the use of Cultural Translation theory when translate similar works by analyzing the typical cases of this project in the light of the cultural translation concept and the characteristics of subtitling translation,as well as discussing the difficulties encountered in translating, especially those rich in Chinese cultural connotations.Typical cases are analyzed according to three clues: cultural equivalence, translator subjectivity and untranslatability, which are three main features of Cultural Translation theory. It can be drawn that in the process of subtitling English translation with Chinese traditional connotation, the central idea should be condensed and re-expressed.Obstacles caused by time and space limitation of subtitling translation can be overcame by corresponding translation methods such as imitation, variation, literal translation, liberal translation, zero translation and transliteration. It is hoped that this thesis can provide reference for the practical work of translation with similar features.
