| China’s newest version of English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Edition)adds “viewing” as a new language skill for the first time,and puts forward new requirements for all the language skills including “viewing”.Internationally,many countries and regions have also emphasized the importance of“viewing” and its related literacy in their programmatic documents of English language learning.The nature and content of “viewing” skill determine that the development of students’ “viewing” ability largely depends on English teaching in which English teachers play an undeniably important role.However,current research on “viewing” skill is mainly concentrated on senior high school English education,and there are few studies on how junior high school English teachers cultivate “viewing” skill in English teaching.Therefore,focus on the cultivation of “viewing” in junior high school English teaching,this study takes English teachers as research object and carries out an investigation on teachers’ cognition,emotion,will and behavior.Through surveying226 junior high school English teachers and interviewing 6 of them,this study comprehensively presents Chinese junior high school English teachers’ cultivation of“viewing” skill,further analyzes the causes and influencing factors,and provides suggestions for teachers.The study found that:(1)Junior high school English teachers’ cognition,emotion,will and behavior in cultivation are in the same direction,but there is large disparity among these four parts.(2)Junior high school English teachers have had basic knowledge of “viewing” skill and its cultivation while they lack a comprehensive and deep understanding.(3)Junior high school English teachers have paid much attention to developing student’s “viewing” skill through training,but teachers’ ability to apply teaching strategies and to select teaching materials need to be improved.(4)Junior high school English teachers’ professional competence,especially their own “viewing”ability,has a great influence on their cultivation.Based on the analysis above,teachers are suggested to strengthen self-cultivation and have a deeper and wider understanding of “viewing” and its cultivation.Secondly,it is recommended that teachers promote the advanced cultivation of “viewing” from the English Activity Perspective.Thirdly,teachers are advised to implement second development of current teaching materials based on the subjects of the units.Finally,it is also significant that teachers improve professional competence of cultivating“viewing” through teaching and research activities at different levels. |
